“ Cardiff City player Gavin Whyte? ? “

Tue Dec 14, 2021 12:46 pm

Oxford United are paying 50% of Whytes wages , after reading this , My View is we would be really skint and desperate to have him back in January as he does not stand out in League 1 two years running.

Whyte is 26 yrs old this January. Time to move him on in June, unless we are relegated.

Oxford United reporter James Roberts , of the Oxford Mail, how Gavin Whyte has been getting on, on a season long loan at League 1 Oxford United after last season being out on loan at Hull City who were in League 1.

Q. How has Whyte's loan spell at Oxford gone?

A. He has done OK, without being one of United’s stand-out players. Whyte has started most of the League One games he has been available for but is yet to deliver the truly outstanding performance he is capable of at this level.

The glaring statistic is zero goals in 20 games, despite having some golden chances.

That being said, his all-round play has definitely improved in recent weeks and hopefully he can add goals and assists to that in the second half of the season.

I think it’s fair to say the fans want more from him.

Everyone knows how good he can be in League One, as he showed in a Hull team that were deserved champions last season, so there is some frustration he hasn’t contributed more in terms of goals and assists.

There are rarely grumbles when he starts, though, and he’s a very good option to have off the bench so the vast majority of fans still think he’s a useful asset.

Q. Cardiff wanted him to improve his end product in terms of assists and goals, how has he done on that front?

A. There is still work to do. No goals and only one assist in 20 games is disappointing, especially in a team like United who create plenty of chances.

His all-round attacking play has been good, it just seems like he’s lacking confidence in front of goal at the moment. You get the sense that when he scores more will follow quite quickly, but it needs to happen sooner rather than later.

Q. Do you think he still has the potential to be a success in the Championship with the Bluebirds?

A. It has been a bit of a theme here, but it’s all about that end product!

He’s got plenty of international experience against some top sides, so it feels like he just needs to knit together all parts of his game.

If he can have a productive second half of the season at United and get a few goals and assists, hopefully that will give him the confidence to kick on next season if he is playing in the Championship.

He had covid, been played out of position including striker.

Fans I know rate him.

I honestly think right wing back would be good for him.

Oxford got some really good players though. Better than Whyte.

I think he could do a job at RWB. We need all the back up we can get for the last run of the season.

The stats this season don't look great in an attacking sense. Moving back in position is a good shout. If we can't pick up enough points soon, we'll need older pros playing to manage a crisis

I'd have him back. He has a lot of pace which we lack, we don't have many wide players, hes experienced, you can't fault his work rate and he could cover a few positions. Like many on here, I think he would make a good RWB.

As a forward, 1 assist so far this season does look poor. But he's played a lot of minutes for Oxford this season so he must be doing something right to keep getting picked.

Remember our club at the moment is cluttered with average players like Whyte, a winger no goals in 20 . If he was any good at some point we would have recalled him. If we keep players like him we'll slowly be building to another situation like we've got now. A definite no from me.

Considering we are very much lacking wide players and he must have 100+ efl games to his name. He's surely very much an option. Always seems to do well for n.ireland.

Not sure we watched the same player the one I seen hardly had much oace for a winger and looks like his end product is still an issue at a lower level. 2million is crazy waste of money yet again

Awesome performance yesterday for Oxford. We really could do with him I think.

They have just paid Barnsley a fee to remove the recall clause for Kane. If we have one for Whyte might be worth a chat even if we aren’t looking to recall him.

What little I seem to remember him here was he wasn’t too bad at tracking back and defending, all loan players should be recalled and let Morison decide.

You're the only person I can recall who thinks he has no pace. Pace and work rate are probably his strongest attributes. Chipped in with a few assists recently as well. We could do with a few extra bodies at the moment. A few positive covid cases and we could be relying on players untested in the league.
