"Even if I wasn’t happy with the numbers, there’s nothing I can do about it. We’ll make the best of what we’ve got and you might even see some more new faces over the Christmas period, because we might need to use some more."

“We are where we are, I will bring through the youth slowly and build from their, money is not there to spend.”

STEVE MORISON:

“I am happy to work with what I have , I knew when I took the job their was no money available and I knew what I had to do, keep this club up and bring through our youth.”

"I haven’t had any conversations with the board about contracts. It’s not top of the agenda at the moment because we need to concentrate on the games.

"I presume it will happen over the next few weeks because we are on Saturday to Saturday games, whereas it has been manic before that. It is like we’ve gone from 100mph to really, really slow. It becomes a long week.

STEVE MORISON:

7 games in- how have you assessed things?

It has been good so far. We are trying lots of new things and the squad have taken it on board. You can see that by their attitude and performances. We have changed training and are training in a slightly different way. We train as we play so what we do on the training ground has to reflect what we do on a matchday. We are trying to get them to believe in what we are asking them to do. It’s about being consistent with the message. If you change things you start to lose their trust.

I believe in it, the staff believe in it and it is our job to make the players believe in it. That’s why we have to be consistent with our message.

Change in morale?

“I spoke about it when I was in the interim. Change creates change. It’s a natural thing. We can put in place what we want to put in place but it is up to the players to carry it out. By the way they’ve been excellent with it, asking questions and wanting to do it. While they’re doing it, they’re still believing in what we’re doing.”

“ I said that about the game at the weekend. For a large part of the game against a very good Sheffield United last weekend we were doing really well. It will be the same on Saturday.”

STEVE MORISON:

Away form so much better than home form - what's the reason for that?

“We are just better away from home than at home at the moment. I’d love to make Cardiff City Stadium like a fortress. I would love that, the players would love it and so would the fans. Everyone would love it. Ultimately does anyone really care if we win more at home than away or more away than at home? It is purely about winning and, given where we are right now, getting as high up the table as we possibly can.

You would need to ask the players how they feel and if they feel something different at home than they do away. I’m not the one out there, I’m standing on the touchline, they’re the ones out there on the pitch. Do they feel something different than they do away. I don’t know. You’d have to ask them.”

On Birmingham

“They have had an up and down season and they lost their last game. That was away from home. Every game in the Championship is tough. You can’t go by the form guide in this league – it is the one league you never want to have a bet on because anything can happen.

They are a good team with some really good players. We will give them the respect they deserve and we hope we can work out a way to beat them.”

What's the Christmas period like as a player?

“As a player I used to love playing over Christmas. It was always a mental period. You’d turn up on Boxing Day and then play again two days later. Over that period, it is about turning up, playing, recovering and using the squad as best you can to get the results you need.”

“But all that is three games away. I am looking no further than Birmingham because that’s all that matters.”

Plenty of spirit in this side?

“Yeah. Anyone that was at training today will know exactly what the spirit is like. The lads are fighting and we know what hurts most on a Saturday. You can’t give a team like Sheffield United a leg up and we did. In those last 15-20 minutes, when everyone thought it as all over and done and dusted, we came back again. From our point of view we are just gutted we conceded those goals so quickly. We needed to frustrate them a bit longer and we couldn’t. We live and learn.”

You are scoring goals, which is a big positive?

We are trying to make changes here and I hope everyone can see that. They are positive changes rather than negative. You are going to win some and lose some. But as long as we are moving in the right direction. The more goals we score the more games we’ll win.

That was the first time since Stoke we had conceded more than 1 goal in a game. We will keep working hard on the training ground. We are getting better all the time at it and hopefully at some stage it will become a habit.

No Sean Morrison?

It will give someone else an opportunity to keep him out of the team. That’s the beauty of football. You can be in one minute and out the next. You have to be ready to take your chance.

Happy with the depth of your squad heading into Christmas?

I haven’t really got a choice! We’ve got what we’ve got. We’ve got a decent squad, and we’ve got competition for places. Especially in the front line. Whoever we’ve put in over the last few weeks, they’ve all performed to a certain level. Even if I wasn’t happy with the numbers, there’s nothing I can do about it. We’ll make the best of what we’ve got and you might even see some more new faces over the Christmas period, because we might need to use some more.

Cardiff City boss Steve Morison makes frank January transfer admission

The Bluebirds boss has once again been quizzed on potential January business

By Tom Coleman

Cardiff City boss Steve Morison insists he's happy to work with what he's got over the coming weeks and says conversations over January have still not yet begun.

However, he admits that decisions over Cardiff's out-of-contract stars are likely to have some influence what sort of business, if any, can be done when the window re-opens.

Joe Ralls, Sean Morrison, Aden Flint, Alex Smithies and Will Vaulks are just some of the big names approaching the end of their current deals, and their futures remain uncertain heading into the new year.

It seems unlikely that all those names will be staying in the Welsh capital given the prohibitive finances involved, but supporters will no doubt be keen to see some movement soon.

However, Morison says he's not yet held any conversations with the club's hierarchy, and suggested that tying down players to new deals wasn't currently the biggest priority

Speaking ahead of Saturday's trip to Birmingham City, Morison said : "I haven’t had any conversations with the board about contracts. It’s not top of the agenda at the moment because we need to concentrate on the games.

"I presume it will happen over the next few weeks because we are on Saturday to Saturday games, whereas it has been manic before that. It is like we’ve gone from 100mph to really, really slow. It becomes a long week.

"I’m sure we will have those conversations."

It remains to be seen what sort of business Cardiff will be able to do when the window re-opens, but Morison admits any activity is likely to be defined by the decisions made on new contracts, presumably due to the potential for freeing up much-needed funds.

"It’ll be exactly the same conversation as the contracts, because that will dictate what will happen over that period," Morison added.

"From my point of view in terms of myself and you guys, until I’ve had conversations with the players that’s going to be my answer."

After the trip to St Andrew's, Cardiff are at home to Derby County, before playing three members of the current top seven over the festive period.

It's a time of the year that will likely push the capabilities and depth of Morison's squad to the limit, but he insists he's happy with what he's got, although he did hint that he may dip into the club's academy once again for reinforcements if needed.

"We’ve got what we’ve got," he said.

"We’ve got a decent squad, and we’ve got competition for places. Especially in the front line. Whoever we’ve put in over the last few weeks, they’ve all performed to a certain level.

"Even if I wasn’t happy with the numbers, there’s nothing I can do about it. We’ll make the best of what we’ve got and you might even see some more new faces over the Christmas period, because we might need to use some more."

Morison hails City's fighting spirit

Steve Morison admits he's been impressed by the character displayed by his team on the training ground this week following their disappointing defeat at home to Sheffield United last weekend.

The Bluebirds travel to Birmingham City on Saturday seeking a return to winning ways, and Morison has been pleased with the way his troops have responded.

STEVE MORISON:

"Anyone who was at training today will know exactly what the spirit is like," he said.

Birmingham have picked up one point in their last five league matches against Cardiff (D1 L4), drawing 1-1 in January 2020.

Cardiff are looking to win consecutive away league games against Birmingham for the first time since September 1927.

Birmingham have picked up nine points from their last four home Championship games (L1), as many as they had accumulated in their previous nine league games at St. Andrews (W2 D3 L4).

Only Blackpool (9) have gained more points from losing positions in away games in the Championship this season than Cardiff (8).

No side has kept more clean sheets in the Championship this season than Birmingham (10), with half those clean sheets coming in the last nine games.
