Alex Smithies must stay?
Alex Smithies is yet another senior star whose deal runs out.
He's on big money, but Cardiff would be crazy to let him go.
Smithies is one of the best goalkeepers in the Championship and without some of his brilliance against the Blades the Bluebirds' defeat would have been much heavier.
One stop, when the ball appeared to be past him, was out of this world.
He can be part of the foundation upon which the team is built next season.
The problem, it appears, are Smithies wages and suggestions he is the highest earner at the club.
Another major decision looms. But Cardiff will be a better side if Smithies is in it.

In a perfect world I would agree with you. He's some shot stopper and that save on Saturday was brilliant.
However, I hear he's our top earner and around £30K a week

That's premier league wages and something we just can't afford, so if he gets an offer of around that elsewhere he'll be gone, simple as that. He certainly better than Fulham's keeper and they seem to have money to burn !
Phillips is a decent keeper, but even if Morison wants to strengthen we'll get a decent keeper for much less than £30k per week.
I'd rather us save the big wages (not as much as £30K though !!) for a 20 goal a season striker, whether that's Moore on an extended contract or a replacement for him.

This is from a printed article, wales online? I dont agree, he is a top keeper, but 30k a week is way too high for the current climate imho, dillon is a decent keeper, we could get 3/4 players in on that money tbf, we are supposed to be trying to gain more stability, and 30k is a big old chunk of money! Feel sort of bad for saying it, but this is our reality at present! Unless he takes a fair drop in wages, he should be let go.

Smithies is an excellent shot stopper, there's no doubt about that.
But I read some stats the other day that he has the 2nd worst save% in the championship.
Those stats are concerning.

Not much difference between him and Phillips, unless he’s willing to reduce his salary by a half let him go! Radcliffe is improving every game so we already have a good back up. Spend his £30k a week wages on two Championship players.

Radcliffe is not rated by the coaches abd the only reason why still here is, we have NO money and he is very cheap.

You build a good team from the back and we need a solid Championship goalkeeper and they don’t come cheap if they are good

Absolutely agree way over paid we'd get a real good midfielder or two for that money , we have good back up in Dillion, we don't have enough in midfield and wide

Smithies will leave unless he takes a reduction of 20k minimum. I think 10k per week is max now we should pay and about time too. Took a pandemic to wake up certain parts to football and wages have been too high for too long

I don't think he's as good as some of our keepers in recent years. Decent shot stopper yes but so are most keepers in this league.

“Must” stay?
Not in my book. Philips is good enough
