'I wouldn't be surprised' - Cardiff City boss Steve Morison makes candid January transfer admission on Rubin Colwill

The Bluebirds boss admits there could well be interest in the Bluebirds starlet in January

By Tom Coleman

Friday 2nd December 2021

Steve Morison admits he 'wouldn't be surprised' to see other clubs taking an interest in Rubin Colwill when the transfer window re-opens next month - but insists Cardiff City remains the best place for him to continue his impressive progress.

The 19-year-old has once again earned heavy praise after netting his fourth goal of the season in the 2-1 win over Luton Town last week, and is now City's joint-top scorer.

It's already been something of a whirlwind year for the youngster, who previously struggled to impress Morison when they were working together with the club's under-23s.

But a stunning first team breakthrough under Mick McCarthy, and the three Wales caps that have come with it, has seen him emerge as one City's brightest young talents.

Morison himself admits the forward still has plenty of work ahead of him, but admits his form is already likely to attract admiring glances

STEVE MORISON:

"I wouldn't be surprised," he said when quizzed on potential interest. "Of course not. I’d be pleased, because that means we’re doing something right. When was the last time we had interest in one of our academy boys?

"We’re talking about a player that’s one of the top goalscorers in the team, playing week in week out and is a massive part of the football club and of where we’ve been and our success. It’s not one we’d be entertaining any time soon."

Morison believes any interest in Colwill should be taken as a ringing endorsement of the club's efforts at academy level, and insists Cardiff remains the ideal place for the youngster to continue his progress.

"This is the best place for him," Morison added. "Playing in front of his family and his friends, the team he’s supported his whole life. Playing with his mates and growing with a support network that love and believe in him.

"I can’t see that [a sale] being of any interest to this football club. But I’m not going to sit here and lie that no one’s going to be interested in a 19-year-old that’s arguably our star man most weeks."

Morison also insists he was right to overlook Colwill during his time as under-23s boss, but has clearly been taken aback by the player's willingness to progress.

"Because he wasn’t good enough. Game was too fast for him. Every time he started the game, the game bypassed him and it was like he couldn’t sort his feet out.

"The balls were around him. But when you brought him on with 20 minutes or 30 minutes to go where the game opened up, he always flourished. He asked me numerous times and I said the same thing to him and then all of a sudden he was someone you couldn’t leave out the team.

"When I watched him for the first team, I felt exactly the same thing at the start of the year. What’s his best cameo of the season? Nottingham Forest where he came on as a sub and the game was opened up.

"He started the next game and he got dragged off at half-time. We’ve come in, and I knew that if I played in a way that suited him, I’d be able to try and get the best out of him. I think ultimately that has happened."

It would not surprise me if we sold him.

It will tell us a lot if we do sell him this January.

Considering that before pandemic we where going to be almost debt free we and mr tan must have lost a lot more money than anyone else in the league by the sound of it
If our only hope is using players from the academy without any funds and then a gem pops up and we sell sell sell what hope is there of us ever been able to build a team around someone and for the future we seem to be in a constant state of transition.

I don’t think he will go Not sure as yet too many premier league clubs would be after him If enough money is offers then he could go with a loan back option is what i think would happen The kid is not ready for the jump up to a top 6 championship team yet

Here we go again, we uncover a potential gem and the papers are trying to sell him already.

Rubin Colwill: Cardiff City expect January transfer interest in young midfielder

Friday 3rd December 2021

By Rob PhillipsBBC Sport Wales football correspondent

Midfielder Rubin Colwill is joint top scorer at Cardiff City this season with four

Cardiff City boss Steve Morison expects interest in Wales midfielder Rubin Colwill in the January transfer window.

But he insists Cardiff is the best place for the teenager to continue his meteoric rise for club and country.

Colwill, 19, only made his Bluebirds debut in February before making his Wales bow and being part of Rob Page's squad at the Euro 2021 finals.

STEVE MORISON:

"I wouldn't be surprised [if there were enquires for Colwill in January]," said Morison.

"I'd be pleased, because that means we are doing something right. When was the last time we had interest in our academy boys?

"I don't mean someone who has played a couple of games and there is a rumour mill.

"We're talking about a player who is joint top goalscorer in the team playing week in week out and is a massive part of the football club.

"You would like to think so, but you would like to think that is not one we would be entertaining any time soon."

Morison helped guide Colwill through the under-23s before taking over the first team when Mick McCarthy departed six games ago.

He has continue to work closely with the young forward, who has developed under Morison's tutelage to become a key player at Cardiff.

In August, Colwill, who has been at the Cardiff Academy since the age of eight, signed a new deal which extends to 2024.

Eye for goal

Colwill scored his fourth goal this season in last Saturday's 2-1 win at Luton Town to move level with club top scorers Kieffer Moore and Aiden Flint.

The Cardiff manager firmly believes Colwill is in the right club to continue to blossom.

"This is the best place for him," Morison added.

"He is playing in front of his family and his friends and the team he has supported his whole life.

"He is playing with his mates and growing, and having a manager and a support network who love him and believe in him.

"Where is the best place to grow? It is here. I cannot see it [attentions of another club] being of any interest to this football club right now.

"But I am not going to sit here and lie and say no one is going to be interested in a 19-year-old who is arguably our star man most weeks, because that will mean you will not take what I am saying as the truth."

Cardiff have no new injury worries ahead of Saturday's Championship game at home to Sheffield United, as they look to build on a run of three wins from their last four league games.

We are no different to any other team on this division bar a couple? If other teams had a 19yr old that was showing great promise(and that's what it is at the moment, promise) teams will show interest, I personally believe he will be still here at the end of the window, could be wrong if a decent offer were to come, but we are trying to become more self sufficient, and that will involve no doubt the odd youngster being sold, but I hope only if the right offers were coming in, and we learn from the past, and add a decent sell on clause, to any deal for our younger players!

It would be far too early to sell him now if we want to maximise profit on a potential sale. If he continues to improve like he currently is, we would be selling him for a fraction of what we could sell him for in another season and a half.

People will criticise the club for selling our best players but this is how a club becomes more sustainable. Collwil has the potential to be a very good player who we could demand a decent fee for. Selling him could allow us to bring in a few players to strengthen where the squad is weak. Whether we recruit well is another story though....

Heard last week before post that Leeds offered £1.5m with £500k add ons

Bit of an insult

We would be stupid to let go our main player. Colwill needs to stay with us to further improve his abilities with the 1st team and for an international stage. Thankfully Steve Morison agrees with me in keeping Colwill in Cardiff as this is the best place for him to improve his playing style.

But if there was offers for Kieffer Moore I can see him going if the price is high for him, say about £8 Million.
We just need to keep every player playing together and gain confidence on and off the pitch and just get there heads down through these upcoming tricky games to get the maximum points available.

So is he actually being sold ?

Re: “ Could City Star be Sold in January? “

That’s the aim of the club this season, get the youngsters in and hope a few make it,to get some money into the club, that’s the way this club will always be run

Every player in the world has a price but unless we get a £10m+ bid for Colwill or Moore I can’t see us selling them. However any bids for any of the players who’s contracts end in the summer would most likely be accepted!

Dan James went for 20m after 32 championship games and 4 goals, Lloyd Kelly played less than 50 games before Bournemouth paid 11m for him.
I'm not saying Colwill has had the same impact yet but does have a European Championship behind him.
Got be 5-10 million with some heavty add ons.

Rational comment and couldn't agree more. IF he starts to reach his potential it's more than likely he'll be sold at some point - just hope it's not top soon!

Why should he be sold if we are supposedly building for the future and want to get back to the Premier League??

I'm not saying v we SHOULD sell him Annis, but if we want to become sustainable, its inevitable the odd shining star will be sold,I'd love to keep every player that looks like they could forge s good career in the game, but with no real money being available we will have little choice but to listen to offers, providing that are decent ones.and sadly while we are still a
championship club, any offers from above will turn a players head, as it did with moore? I'm hoping no decent offers are forthcoming, and he stays here with us,but can also see the other sides to the argument tbh.he is only 19,and some a describing him as "crown jewel" material already, if he improves as he has to date, then who knows what happens next yr?

I wouldn’t like to guess his price tag now but it’s nothing compared to what he could be worth in 18 months time if he continues like he is. I wouldn’t sell unless it was a big offer.
