There are few players in this Cardiff City squad who have been able to hold their head high for the entirety of this campaign - but Ryan Giles is one of them.

He looked like a shining light from the very outset and has grown with each passing week.

He is lightning-quick, has a menacing left foot and his ability to deliver an inch-perfect cross while running at speed truly is something to behold.

The frightening thing is, at 21, he is still raw and has much to learn. There is no doubt he can get even better and his progress will be interesting to document.

In the short term, though, he has a vital role to play for Cardiff this season. He is their chief creative force — certainly on a consistent basis, anyway, with Rubin Colwill also still raw but producing exciting moments — and is really starting to motor for City.

Giles' numbers this season are staggering.

He has already registered nine assists, more than any other player in the top-four tiers of English football.

He has also created a chance, on average, every 29 minutes, a better ratio than anyone else in the Championship.

It is not an over-exaggeration to say that, without Giles' influence this season, Cardiff would be far worse off than they already are.

It throws up the looming question of the January transfer window, where recall clauses in contracts come into play.

Cardiff fans have themselves called for their own players to return to the Welsh capital in the new year, with Ryan Wintle and Max Watters near the top of many supporters' wish lists.

Who's to say Wolves fans are not seeing those numbers and thinking the exact same thing?

Indeed, Wolves have been keeping close tabs on Giles this season and it is understood they were not wholly pleased with how he was being utilised at the beginning of the season.

The Molineux outfit see Giles as a left wing-back in the long term, while Mick McCarthy recognised the player's abilities further up the pitch and deployed him as a left winger for the most part.

With Cardiff in the midst of a dire losing streak and their player being played out of position, there was a real possibility that Giles could get recalled at the earliest opportunity in January.

Wolves are not shy when it comes to recalling Giles, either, they were unimpressed when Coventry City left him out of a match-day squad earlier this year and pulled him back from his spell there. He joined rivals Rotherham later in the same window.

But the landscape has changed markedly in recent weeks and it will surely only serve to ease any Wolves worries.

Giles has been deployed in his rightful position at wing back and the player, as well as Cardiff, are flourishing.

Giles has returned with four assists from wing back in new manager Steve Morison's six games in charge. He still has the influence at the top end of the pitch but is learning his trade defensively, too.

There will be many things near the top of the list when January comes around for Cardiff. Pace is one of them, but if your quickest player leaves it puts you even further behind the eight-ball.

Cardiff will hope that doesn't happen and, given the trajectory of both the player and the team at the minute, it's looking less likely that it will.

More pace potentially further up the pitch to dovetail with Giles could make for a really potent and dangerous combination out wide for Cardiff and will be a nightmare for opposition defenders.

Giles' delivery, overlapping and acceleration with the ball at his feet has been marvellous to watch so far this season and long may that continue.

He is a real gem and has been one of the few real bright sparks so far this season. He, and Cardiff, will be better for his spell at the club, of that there is now little doubt.

I said early on, if he continued how he started with us, we will struggle to keep him here if his club decide they want him back!! And it still is a possibility he could be recalled. Would be a blow to us if he is!
