GARETH BALE - is he the greatest ever Welsh Footballer !

Fri Nov 12, 2021 10:38 am

I consider myself as being extremely privileged to have seen first hand the many great moments of football shown by the great GB (France 2016 will live in my memory until i pop my clogs :notworthy: ) It true to say that Gareth was certainly in his prime in 2016. He has been a great player and a fantastic Welshman. He would turn up and play his heart out if we were playing tiddlewinks. I would like to say thank you Gareth and you are the greatest and a well deserved 100th cap tomorrow evening,  :notworthy:

100%. Admittedly John Charles was well before my time, but no other player can claim to have almost single handedly provided the extra push to get us not into just a one off tournament, but looking like tournament regulars.

It's all subjective and difficult to compare those 'greats' of different eras

Most of us weren't around when Wales reached the Quarter Final of the 1958 World Cup (only losing to Brazil by a single goal scored by Pele) so our knowledge of those players and those who came before is limited to books, fan talk and film clips

Gareth is undoubtedly a 'great' in all aspects of football not just with his beloved Wales and is/will be right up there with the very best

He is certainly the most successful player to leave these shores to ply his trade overseas (so to speak)

However, there have been other Welsh 'greats' who might claim the 'GOAT' handle, including players like John Charles, Ivor Allchurch and some many of us have celebrated, inc. Ian Rush, Mark Hughes, Neville Southall and others

A welsh great along with many others mentioned.... but cannot dispute John Charles is greatest "EVER" welsh player? No one in British football as ever been world class as both striker and defender his record is truly remarkable both here and in Italy......

I only saw John Charles in his last ever game at Cardiff by which time he was way past his prime so i cant judge on personal experience. But as has already been mentioned he was world class as a defender and forward. He was a hero in Italy. The disgrace is he has been relatively ignored by the English media.

Cant choose between the two as that goal by Bale in the final against Liverpool is possibly the most extraordinary i have seen in both its execution and timing- he had just come on- and was the mark of a great player.

John Charles for me So many football people including the late, great Jimmy Greaves have been quoted as saying Charles was the best centre half AND centre forward they had ever seen.

You’re only a boy! I saw John Charles play his first game for us against Norwich when he scored from a free kick in our own half! A brilliant player and modest man, very difficult to judge who is the best ever Welsh Footballer because they’re from different times but Charles,Bale,Giggs,Rush,Hughes and Southall arguably the top 6.
