" Cardiff City request approved to wear away kit at home "

Wed Nov 10, 2021 10:30 pm

Cardiff City have had their request approved by the EFL to wear the club's away kit in their home fixture against Coventry City on Boxing Day.

It is to raise awareness for homelessness. The initiative, with the name and social media hashtag of #NoHomeKit, is being promoted by the homeless charity Shelter.

League One club Portsmouth have also had their request approved by the EFL.

However, the Premier League have blocked the idea for their clubs. They say it would be a breach of their rules. Full story below.

BBC Sport

The Premier League has blocked its clubs wearing their away kits at home on Boxing Day to raise awareness around homelessness.

Homeless charity Shelter hoped to get the support of clubs for the #NoHomeKit initiative on 26 December.

However, while the clubs were supportive of the idea, the Premier League says it would break its rules around kits.

The rules demand home teams wear home kits as their first priority.

The Football League says it will accept clubs wearing away kits on the same day if they make a formal request.

So far, Cardiff and Portsmouth have had their requests approved, whilst another 15 EFL clubs are committed to supporting the campaign.

The Premier League has noted clubs are allowed to change their sponsor for one game per season and replace it with a charitable message.

"The Premier League receives a large number of requests from charities every season, however we aren't able to support all centrally," the organisation said.

"Clubs are entitled to support charitable causes, and we encourage clubs to do so, provided it is in compliance with Premier League rules."

Shelter feels the sight of clubs and fans wearing a different kit at a home game would be a powerful message to help raise awareness of homelessness.

The organisation estimates 180,000 households have lost their homes during the coronavirus pandemic. It has given advice to 22,644 households through its dedicated helpline team during 2020 and 2021.

BBC Sport understands a number of clubs are now considering their own initiative to promote #NoHomeKit.

Yeah, the colour I despise.

Nearly as bad as us wearing White for England. Now who wears that colour?

Although I agree that raising awareness of homelessness is important, how is this going to help people on the street?

Not a snipe on the idea its a genuine question

Selling the shirts after the game with proceeds going to homeless charities I'd imagine?

I suspect it is more about virtue signalling than doing anything about homelessness.

Agreed, pure gesture. Football clubs could do a lot for homelessness by opening some of their vast array of facilities and creating overnight shelters.

This would be a great way to raise awareness and much needed funds. Hopefully, the club will take this path (if allowed) otherwise as others have said without a direct action it is at risk of being an empty, if albeit nice, gesture.

At least they're doing something.

It's disappointing but not surprising to have people on here having a problem with it.

CARDIFF TO PLAY AWAY KIT AT HOME ON BOXING DAY

Thu Nov 11, 2021 6:24 pm

The Bluebirds will be playing in there pink away kit at the Cardiff City Stadium when they host Coventry City.
It's good that the EFL will support such a cause especially around christmas time. Weird how the top flight will not do this.

It seems the modern 'faceless' way; and they rarely come up with better ideas/solutions

I do wonder Chris, how many of these detractors drop some money to a homeless person in town etc?? Probably none, and their excuse? Ahhh ,they only by drugs or booze
With it!! Is my guess.
Anything with a slight hint of positivity, seems to just be dismissed as "virtual signaling " an "empty gesture" etc etc,

The very least it will do, is raise awareness of a rapidly growing problem, I read somewhere, around 130,000 families lost their homes during pandemic!! If a homeless person is begging, I drop money, but have bought them a happy meal, or a meal deal to eat on umpteen occasions, and will do so if I can.
Most are very grateful for that bite to eat, and not all are "junkies and piss heads" but desperate people, who have found themselves out of luck.

As I said in my post, it was a genuine question. I'm certainly not against the idea - I even wrote I agreed it was important to raise awareness

I do a lot for the homeless if I'm honest but not anything I need or want to confirm on a football forum :bluescarf:
