Thu Sep 16, 2010 12:21 pm

I Believe National service should come back in the UK, 2yrs Service for 16 yrs olds or when they reach 18 yrs old. Put more Respect back in to our Country, Also All immigrants would also have to do 2 yrs :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

I'm an instructor in the Army Cadet Force. We take in 13-14year olds and when they leave as 18years olds the change is massive. I really do think if Youth Organisation were given more publicity and money, our society would be a much nicer place as youths respond to discipline and challenges. I actually wrote my dissertation on this subject.

During my time in the Army my Regiment used to play the enemy for other nato nations forces who still make their kids do National Service. They where the worst fighting forces we ever came up against. None of them wanted to be there so they made no effort and didnt want to learn. They spent most of their time arsing about. I think this would have a negative effect on our reputation as the best Armed Forces in the world.

However i do think some form of boot camp discipline would be a good idea, abit like that lads army show they did just with a bit more physical punishment.

No, I don't. But what I do propose is that habitual young offenders be given the option of a long prison term, or a year in a special area of the armed forces.

I think 90% would opt for the latter, and 12 months' of discipline and responsiblity would work wonders.

Subsidised apprenticeships, large scale public projects (building new railways / roads / public buildings etc / painting murals).
A bit like what brought America out of it's depression in 1930's.

What you propose might work on discipline for young people, but all I know when I was 18 that's the last thing I would've wanted to do - but then I did go off the rails a bit! :ayatollah:

Boot camp all the way ! Prison can be too easy for many repeat offenders, all they need is some focus and achievement in thier life. Prison is meant to be about rehabilitation, and not punishment. But in my eyes giving inmates tv's and three square meals a day is a much better life than they get on the outside.

Give them some strong disapline and maybe a trade to go with it !!! You need to respect yourself before you can learn to respect others...

You can't force people to do National Service.

Its not the answer.

There are plenty of good kids out there who have gone onto be well respected, law abiding adults.
For all the negative press Kids get, there are plenty out there who are doing good things. Like everything, though, it doesnt
get reported does it, as 'Children raise £15,000 for Old Peoples Home' doesnt sell papers like '12 year old gets ASBO'.

Are things realy that worse now? Where I live, we dont get problems with Youngsters, whereas 10-15 years ago, through the winter, People would regularly get stones, eggs etc thrown at their properties through Dark nights.

Kids drinking in the Parks and streets on a Friday, Saturday night was a big problem, but not so now.

People say Kids now have no respect, but is that realy true? I dont think it is, there were as many problem Teenagers about when I grew up as there are today.

I dont see how National Service would help at all sorry.

In fact, it could have more of a negative phycological effect on Kids who are forced to do it and ruin their potentialy bright futures.

For example, mate of mine has a lovely son, 15 years old, wants to be a teacher, works hard, never any bother and very respectful. National Service would make him an emotional wreck.

Much of it is to do with Parenting, and how you are brought up. If a Teenager is a problem, shows no respect and is constantly offending then you have to look at how they were brought up surely, but I appreciate that bad kids do sometimes come from good families, thats just a way of life.

If kids want to join the Army, Navy or RAF they know where to sign up, it shouldnt be forced on anyone.

Absolutely hit the nail on the head here....and we the elders have to take some responsibility for it too. We're all too engrossed in our own little worlds to see what is going on out there....until it affects us personally

It (National Service) would be a useful tool but it'll never happen in this country again....

I do think thing were worse 10-15 years ago, I was roming the streets then and we were all little buggers. But bored out of our minds. Where do you live  ?

Re: IS ANYONE FOR THIS ?

Not for all NO. But for problem kids (keep getting expelled from school ETC) then yes. If they knew what was in store for them they might toe the line. But most kids are trying to do well in school then go to college and then University ETC and it would be grossly unfair on them if it was compulsory. But there are an awful lot of kids out there that need some discipline forced into them. But why should the decent kids be punished for the sins of some feral kids out of control. That would not be fair, if my Boy wants to join the Army that would be his choice but he should not be forced to do this because of others.

Not everyone should do it but those not in education or employment should be forced to do 6-12 months. Fed up with chavs thinking the world owes them a living and our welfare state supporting this.

National Service should be about discipling youngsters and teaching them new skills. Street cleaning, gardening etc would help a great deal.
