Will Vaulks: “Steve Morison has changed quite a lot”

Tue Nov 02, 2021 3:00 pm

Morison 4th manager for you, how has it been?

WILL VAULKS:

If he was to come in and not change anything, what’s the point?

He has changed quite a bit. He has put his stamp on what he wants us to do. A bit more detailed analysis of the games in training - trying to have a look at what we did well against Stoke and what we didn’t, where we can improve. Little clips in training to make things better.

He has tried to instil belief in us that we can play better football, we are better players than what we’ve shown over the period of poor results.

He is doing his best to get results, as we are as players. Hopefully, after the weekend, albeit 3-0 down, we can see where that takes us and can take him.

How much of a difference does it make having someone come in and lift spirits?

WILL VAULKS:

It’s no disrespect to Mick McCarthy at all. Spirits were down because of results, not that he’d lost the dressing room - if people think that.

We have to take responsibility for a lot of poor results.

Steve has come in with fresh eyes but he also knows us. It’s not been that much of a big transition.

Youngsters in and around you, what do you make of them?

WILL VAULKS:

We’ve got a great crop of players coming through. Rubin has been the standout but Mark Harris isn’t too old! He’s not played that many games. There are some great ones coming up.

I am a slightly older head now and you do need experienced Championship players in the team. We are relying on young lads as it is and look where we are. At the moment, we are not in a great position.

We possibly need some more bodies in, in January, if that’s something the club are looking at, I don’t know.
At the end of the day, they’ve got an opportunity and they are taking it.

There are a few more you’ll see over the course of the season, they’ve got a good chance.

Wales, four in the squad, Cardiff contributing to national team?

WILL VAULKS:

It’s brilliant. It was a massive part of the reason I signed for Cardiff. I was the only national player involved at the time. Now we have four - two young lads and Kieffer, who is carrying the weight of his country at the moment.

Midfield role has changed a bit now under Morison?

WILL VAULKS:

That’s probably one of the biggest things that Steve has done since he’s come in.

Stoke, we had more passes than we have done for any game previous to that this season.

It’s something that, under the previous manager, let’s be honest about it, the midfield was bypassed a lot.

It was a case of winning the fight in there, turning around and giving the ball back behind.

We came under quite a bit of stick as midfielders for not passing the ball enough or dictating play enough, but I’d like to see any midfielder in the world come in and do that when we’re playing that style of football.

That’s not a dig at the style of football, but that’s not what was required, getting the ball off the centre half and spraying it about.

At Stoke, how many more passes we made, how much more we were passing the ball, that’s because of the style of football we were playing, trusting each other more.

That does annoy me at times. People say we need someone in there who can pass the ball. We can all pass the ball if that’s required! But we do what the manager asks and if that’s to win the fight then you do that.

Will Vaulks has said caretaker manager Steve Morison has already "put his stamp" on things at Cardiff City and is excited by the style of football he is already trying to implement.

Cardiff stopped the run of losses on Saturday, coming back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 at Stoke City, and there were certainly many improvements to take from the game.

And Vaulks has given some insight into just what Morison has changed during his 10 days as interim boss.

WILL VAULKS:

"He has changed quite a bit," the Bluebirds midfielder said. "He has put his stamp on what he wants us to do. A bit more detailed analysis of the games in training - trying to have a look at what we did well against Stoke and what we didn’t, where we can improve. Little clips in training to make things better.

"He has tried to instil belief in us that we can play better football, we are better players than what we’ve shown over the period of poor results.

"He is doing his best to get results, as we are as players. Hopefully, after the weekend, albeit 3-0 down, we can see where that takes us and can take him."

The midfield, like the rest of the team, came under fire during City's dire run of eight losses.

Fans were demanding the players in the middle of the park impacted the game more, with many matches just drifting them by without making any meaningful contributions at the top end of the pitch.

But Vaulks argues that no midfielder in the world could dictate play or use the ball better at the start of this season, because the style of play under former manager Mick McCarthy was not conducive to it.

"That’s probably one of the biggest things that Steve has done since he come in," Vaulks said of the shift in style.

"Stoke, we had more passes than we have done for any game previous to that this season.

"It’s something that, under the previous manager, let’s be honest about it, the midfield was bypassed a lot. It was a case of winning the fight in there, turning around and giving the ball back behind.

"We came under quite a bit of stick as midfielders for not passing the ball enough or dictating play enough, but I’d like to see any midfielder in the world come in and do that when we’re playing that style of football.

"That’s not a dig at the style of football, but that’s not what was required, getting the ball off the centre half and spraying it about.

"At Stoke, how many more passes we made, how much more we were passing the ball, that’s because of the style of football we were playing, trusting each other more.

"That does annoy me at times. People say we need someone in there who can pass the ball. We can all pass the ball if that’s required! But we do what the manager asks and if that’s to win the fight then you do that."

Vaulks is yet to find the back of the net this season - and it is rare the Wales midfielder can say that after 15 games of a season. But he is hopeful that, in this new system, that will change soon.

"I’ve started eight games this season and not got a goal yet - that’s not something I like," he added.

"It’s something that, with a bit more of a free-flowing style, I’m hoping to do more of over the next few games."

Cardiff's ability to score goals all around the park has been lacking, it must be said, while goals have been flying in the other end.

Vaulks says he knows that the lead up to Christmas from now is critical if Cardiff are to really propel themselves out of this relegation battle they currently find themselves in.

He waxes lyrical about the young players coming through and those who have made an impact so far. But, when January comes, he hopes the club make some experienced additions to the squad; some battle-hardened and experienced players to ease the pressure off some of these Championship rookies.

"We’ve got a great crop of players coming through. Rubin has been the standout but Mark Harris isn’t too old! He’s not played that many games. There are some great ones coming up," he added.

"But I am a slightly older head now and you do need experienced Championship players in the team.

"We are relying on young lads as it is and look where we are. At the moment, we are not in a great position.

"We possibly need some more bodies in, in January, if that’s something the club are looking at, I don’t know.
But, at the end of the day, they’ve got an opportunity and they are taking it."

Sounds like players were not happy playing hoofball.

Did he tell Will to stop giving the ball away and time his tackling a bit better

A helpful insight. Let's see what they are capable of by way of passing football.
