The new style of football

Sun Oct 31, 2021 12:32 pm

We have been crying out for us to play the football on the ground instead of in the air.

During our good spell yesterday I noticed we play a 50/50 of that where we played the ball on the ground at the back then produced some clever chips over the Stokes head for the likes of Harris to run on. Perhaps we have found an answer.

I agree and if done well it’s very effective. Noticed the midfielders dropping deeper to receive too but only Colwill had the ability (or desire) to try and turn rather than jus knocking it back to the defenders.

We seemed to have a lot more time at the back yesterday. I am a Flint fan as he scores goals. But we seemed a lot more comfortable, despite the three goals, with Morrison in the centre. Again, don’t get the Nelson love in, lost count of the times he aimlessly hoofed a ball back to a Stoke player. At least with Flint you know that’s not part of his game and a goal or two from him could win us the game. Not against playing Brown there but again, he isn’t much of a ball player.

I’m all for a direct style of football as long as we play football on the final third like we did when we were promoted with NW.

I agree with all of that apart from Morrison. I thought he looked slow and lethargic in defence which is his main job. He did bring the ball out a few times though but I’d pick Flint over him every time based on current form. All opinions though mate.

Andrew, I agree Sean Morrison (2 r's :laughing6: ) has looked a little off form of late but I am one who belueves he has been let down positionally by those around him, including midfield

Time will tell on that one but he has never been a quick mover.

We have historically tended to do better with him than without in the side and I can recall more than one occasion where he's been out and we've willed his quick return as player/captain and a susequent return to winning ways

You are absolutely right Chris.
I remember Mark Hudson struggling with us for a while before it became apparent (to me anyway) that he was covering the positional errors by Anthony Gerrard and (to a lesser extent) Darcy Blake.
I’m concerned that he may have lost his edge though, particularly with his contract coming up for renewal.
Maybe it’s because he’s been such a stalwart that when he drops below 7/10 it’s more noticeable.

He's been a Colossus, mate, so youbare right and any downturn is more noticeable than in certain others :thumbright:

On form, accounting for an unusual amount of injuries… Morrison isn’t where he usually is. Flint is in better form. But make no mistake Morrison is a leader for us and doesn’t hesitate to put his body on the line.

I wouldn’t disagree with that mate.

Nelson couldn't pass water. Awful distribution again yesterday.

Morrison has been terrible for quite some time. Out of position for a center back all of the time, slow and seems to be uninterested. Not our solid rock anymore.

If Nelson is picked over Morrison based on form then there is seriously something wrong. Morrison a victim of his own success. Has always been a rock for us. Injuries may be catching upto him though. First name on the team sheet for me though personally.

I agree with your comment about Nelson. On form he is way behind Morrison, Flint and McGuinness.

For me McGuinness is the first name on the sheet for CB purely because he has a bit more pace than the others and looks decent on the ball, therefore in order to have balance it needs to be him plus one/two of the others depending on whether we're playing with two or three CBs.

Flint has been more impressive than Morrison this year but Morrison is a leader and captain (particularly off the field) and that is probably key in his selection under Morison.
