Peter Thorne & Graham Kavanagh in the red and white of Stoke

Thu Oct 28, 2021 1:58 pm

Peter Thorne & Graham Kavanagh in the red and white of Stoke, both were goal scorers in their 2-1 Auto Windscreens win over Bristol City in 2000. Not long after they would both sign for Cardiff City in big money deals helping the club to play off success and promotion to the Championship :bluebird:

I remember when they signed. We had just come up from the basement and all of a sudden we forked out nearly three million on the pair of them a huge sum in those days for League One.

Thornes header against the Wurzels play off IST leg. The roof came off the Grange end when that went in

The Potter 'fans' weren't happy at the time and some even cried...

Shortly after, we went back up to Stoke for the Play-offs (1st Leg) and beat them at home...

Again, their weird 'fans; weren't happy and ended up fighting amongst themselves in the home end, as us attending Bluebirds lapped it up, wound them up further and sang a rendition of "Sit down and behave yourselves", which even their local plods said was as funny as, considering our residual reputation at that time...

Horrid place, horrid 'fans' but two great players for the Bluebirds who had to leave way too early... :notworthy:

The second leg in Cardiff summed up our luck over the years. Thorne missed an easy header to wrap it up followed by a last minute "offside" goal from Stoke to take it into extra time and then a deflected free kick to win it for them in dying minutes of extra time. I remember being surprised at the very poor turn out of Stoke fans considering the importance of the game-around 800 or so.
