“ Ryan Wintle earns praise at Blackpool “

Thursday 28th October 2021

Unheralded Blackpool midfielder Ryan Wintle has earned the praise of manager Neil Critchley for his string of impressive performances in the middle of the Seasiders' midfield.

Wintle was signed as a free agent by Cardiff back in the summer transfer window, but Mick McCarthy decided to allow the player to leave on a season-long loan up at Bloomfield Road because he thought the player would struggle for game time.

That is ironic now, of course, given the midfield crisis currently staring at Cardiff ahead of the clash with Stoke this weekend.

Blackpool have shot up to 11th in the table after a rocky start to the season and Wintle has been central to that.

Some believe he has slipped a little under the radar, despite his performances in the middle of the park, but Critchley said everyone at the club has realised his importance over the last few weeks while praising his fearless nature and infectious character.

CRITCHLEY:

"I think he’s been excellent," Critchley told the Blackpool Gazette.

"He certainly doesn’t go under the radar with the players and the staff because we appreciate the quality he’s got.

"To come into a team where he doesn’t know anyone with a new way of playing and to settle in so quickly and stamp his authority on the games, I think he’s been fantastic.

"Obviously I knew a lot about him and I had seen a lot of him during his time at Crewe, so I knew the qualities he’s got and the type of player and person he is as well.

"He’s got an infectious personality, he’s got a bubbliness about him every day and he takes it out onto the pitch.

"He’s got a really good temperament to play football, he’s got no fear, he’s not fazed by anything and he’s been excellent for us so far."

Blackpool have won six of the nine games in which Wintle has played since he moved there in September and the player himself seems to be enjoying it.

"Going into this weekend, we're outside of the play-offs on goal difference," he told the club's website.

"At the start of the season, I don't think many people would have predicted that.

"With the way we set-up as a team, it allows me to play my game comfortably and become as effective as possible. I've played alongside Kenny Dougall and Kevin Stewart in the middle of the park this season, and I think we all look comfortable on the ball and are enjoying our football.

"It's been a really productive few weeks from the side. The performances at Reading and at home to Preston have shown what we're capable of, so long may it continue."

I bet he'd be over the moon to travel back down here and join in a relegation scrap.
