Mick McCarthy reveals talks with Newcastle United's axed boss
By Glen Williams
Mick McCarthy revealed he spoke with Steve Bruce the week before he got the sack at Newcastle United, joking he wanted to find someone who was feeling worse than him.
Bruce's protracted exit from the Toon elicited some pretty abusive messages aimed towards the manager amid the Magpies' poor run of form.
Cardiff, of course, are currently on an even worse run, having lost their last seven matches, with pressure ramping up on McCarthy heading into this weekend's clash with Middlesbrough.
But McCarthy said Bruce lived and breathed Newcastle, with his family all from there, too, and would have found it tough to block out the negativity.
The Bluebirds boss, however, said he tries to avoid the places he knows he will get abuse.
"Steve is from Newcastle, he lives in Newcastle, he is a Newcastle fan," McCarthy said of Bruce.
"I spoke to him the week before [he left], I actually rang him up because I thought I'd find someone who was feeling worse than me, he came top of my list!
"So we had a bit of a chat and it was tough for him, because that's where he is from and his family live up there. That would be extremely tough.
"I am not [from Cardiff] and I don't go looking to find out what people think about me."
He added: "It's football, as a player you got abuse. I'm not condoning it, by the way, I think it's completely wrong. It's the social media element.
"At the game, if they've paid to come and we are playing well and they cheer me, the team, we all love that.
"If we play badly, in some of the games we have deserved stick. I've got no trouble with that whatsoever, with them in the stadium."

I agree with you; but sadly some on here have no standards to know when something is plain wrong and/or out of order

I think Mick is a decent bloke and always faces up to the media after each defeat, which can't be easy. No matter what we all think of his football style and tactics we should all treat him with respect. He's clearly trying his best but it appears not to be good enough at the moment.
