CITY 4 SUNDERLAND 0 from 2004

Postby MoodyBluebird » Fri Oct 15, 2021 2:14 pm

A few weeks ago the question of Sunderland's excellent support was raised. I mentioned that I'd never liked them since they booed a minute's silence for John Charles, a fact that Annis didn't seem to recall.

Other than the booing, two things stuck in my mind, that we gave them a hammering and Richard Langley scored !

Having those facts on board, I trawled through the records and found that all the info tied up.

Anyone else remember the booing before the game ?

Yes I remember the booing.

Was one of the first games I took my daughter to (she soon lost interest!) so I was in the Canton Stand and there were a few choice words being shouted at the Sunderland fans despite the placards at the front of the Canton Stand (which was the family enclosure of course back then) telling people not to use bad language in the family enclosure!

Would I be right in thinking that Alan Lee also got a goal that day?

Just looked it up.

Guess who Sunderland's manager was that day?

Most mackems I’ve met have been good blokes.. Sunderland issued an apology afterwards, and I believe it was a small section only.

Well I'm glad other fans remember it too. I had started to doubt myself !

Richard Langley, who was never a favourite with the crowd scored a cracking goal if my memory serves me right.

Not so sure about it being a small section only. I was in Grandstand, near the Grange End and the booing seemed to be quite extensive, which reflected very badly on their supporters and the club.

Langley was the 2004 equivalent of Bacuna.

I can recall that . Remember good numbers from them and some booing but certainly not the whole end . Didn’t recall the score mind .

Richard Langley , Jesus , forgot about him .

Around the 1970 mark we gave Sunderland a pasting at NP and me and a mate went for a game of snooker after the match in High St. We were playing in the back room upstairs and 3 Sunderland fans ran in looking terrified. They told us they'd been chased by a few of our boys and were moaning they'd travelled 300 miles to get done on the park and the terraces. They pleaded with us not to give them away after they spotted our blue scarfs on the chair. Next thing, about 4 city skinheads rushed in asking us if we'd seen any Sunderland fans, we didn't give them away and they bought us burgers and chips and stuff. When it was safe, they went but gave us their phone numbers and said if we wanted to go up for the return game, they'd look after us. Bit far to go for a couple of youngsters but I seem to remember later that season we went up there and won 4-0. Good days when we used to score goals, maybe we'll score again one day, and even get one in the first half. :bluescarf:

Not defending it but it was almost 20 yrs ago and football crowds behaved differently only two yrs after we'd sang about Leeds fans being killed in Turkey and remember a lot booing when we had a minutes silence for Alf Ramsey.
