:bluebird: :bluebird: “ MICK McCARTHY UPDATES CARDIFF CITY FANS “ :bluebird: :bluebird:

Friday 15th October 2021

To many Mick can’t afford to lose this local derby against rivals Swansea as that would be it to many, after McCarthy has not only lost 7 of his last 8 games , but the his team has played dire football.

MICK McCARTHY:

Seven, pressure, you feeling it?

Under pressure to get results, always, no matter where you are.

I get what you’re asking. If you think I’m under any pressure other than wanting to win the game on Sunday, then no, I’m not feeling that.

It’s a lot easier when you’re winning, that’s for sure.

You have to stick together and keep doing what you believe in.

At some point you’re going to get a result and who knows, that might start Sunday.

McCarthy

Derby?

I love the derbies. Last year we had no one in! It’ll be a bit different, this one.

MICK McCARTHY:

Spoken to your experienced players about the derby?

I’ve had a few derbies in my life! They are always high profile and I love that about them.

If you can win them then they are brilliant. If you lose them it leaves you pretty low, even more so the fans.

Players and managers come and go but fans are always there. They love the bragging rights.

MICK McCARTHY:

Kieffer Moore did well for Wales, how important is it for him to continue form?

If you look back at how important he has been over the last two seasons it would register with everyone how important it is.

It’s been tough on him and all of us, really. He certainly looks like he’s getting his form back.

He scratched his eye in the week but he looks OK.

Clash of styles?

I would say so, yes. A possession-based style.

When it works it’s great, a bit like us, when it works it’s great.

MICK McCARTHY:

Swansea, what you expecting?

They like to have possession of the ball, they keep the ball for fun.

Play at the back, try and open you up, it’s important for us to be compact.

We are looking forward to the game.

Newcastle takeover?

It’s of no consequence or interest to me. I’m sick of hearing about it to be honest so I’m not going to add any more fuel to it.

Are you under pressure?

"Under pressure to get results, always, no matter where you are," he said when asked about the run of poor results.

"I get what you’re asking. If you think I’m under any pressure other than wanting to win the game on Sunday, then no, I’m not feeling that.

"I feel for the lads, because the lads give everything.

"It’s a lot easier when you’re winning, that’s for sure. But you have to stick together and keep doing the right things, what you believe in.

"You know what, we will get a result. At some point you’re going to get a result and who knows, that just might be Sunday."

There was no atmosphere except for the two benches. So that was a bit spiky and a bit spicy.

They are always important.

You hope that none of us are affected by the atmosphere that much that we make mistakes.

MICK McCARTHY:

Are the board behind you?

“Fully and they have said they are fully supporting me in what I am doing and bringing in the younger players and I have had nothing but support from them.”

He said he has only had support from the top brass and the only pressure he feels is what he has placed on himself to win this weekend's derby.

"I’ve only had support from the top," McCarthy added.

"When that question is asked, it’s always about the job. That's the meaning behind, 'are you feeling under pressure?'

Unlucky?

No. At Blackburn we started well but I didn’t see us get opened up like we did. Against Coventry, West Brom, I thought we were really poor in those games to be honest.

Re: MICK McCARTHY:

Fans been vocal, what’s it going to take to get them back onside?

You know the answer, winning games. Playing well against Reading, the crowd were great, fabulous against Reading.

Performances are important, but results are the most important thing and we’ve not been getting them.

Any stick I’ve been getting after West Brom, Coventry, Blackburn, thoroughly deserved, for all of us.

Reading was a different ball game. Can we produce that performance? If we do then we can win the game.

Time to work on positives from Reading?

We’ve had six of the players around the place!

The answer is probably no. Working on anything [has been hard].

We’ve had a lot of players away. It’s been different.

It’s only today we’ve got everybody back in.

How are the players?

Yes, we have got everybody fit.

Tom Sang is still suffering with his toe.

Everybody is OK.

I’m very excited! It’s going to be unlucky for someone I guess. Let’s hope it’s them.

They only end up being great occasions if we get something out of them.

Sol Bamba believes it could have been dealt with better?

MICK McCARTHY:

I was tempted to ring Sol, but I left it.

But the story that he wasn’t told, well that’s wrong because I told him.

There was some suggestion that there was a coaching role, but there was no coaching role available.

I don't know if there was some suggestion at some stage that there was a coaching role.

We have all the coaches in place.

In terms of staying on as a player. Hence the reason I put him on for the last minute of the game.

He knew from me, but if he’s suggesting he hasn’t been told by anyone else.

He was told he could come back for pre-season to keep himself fit to get a new club.

Maybe it could of been handled differently, but that is out of my hands.

Re: MICK McCARTHY:

Cardiff City captain Sean Morrison is back in contention for Sunday's crucial south Wales derby clash with Swansea City.

The Bluebirds centre back missed the 1-0 defeat by Reading before the international break owing to a thigh strain, however he has returned and will be available for selection for the fixture at the Swansea.com Stadium.

Another boost for City fans is that Kieffer Moore is fully fit after taking a whack in the eye while away on international duty with Wales, a blow which left him with blurred vision afterwards.

However Mick McCarthy has said the player has recovered well and will likely lead the line against the Swans this weekend.

Sam Bowen, who played so well in that defeat by the Royals, missed this week's Wales under-21s loss to Netherlands, has recovered from illness and will also be available.

Tom Sang, however, will likely miss out again because he is still struggling with that toe issue which has plagued him since the back end of last season.

But it is largely a clean bill of health for Cardiff, who sorely need a win this weekend if they are to dig themselves out of a slump which has seen them lose the last five games on the spin.

McCarthy admitted that he feels under pressure going into this Sunday's match, but only from within.

McCarthy said he had been given no ultimatum regarding this Sunday's derby and doesn't feel it's a must-win game in terms of him keeping his job.

He said he has only had support from the top brass and the only pressure he feels is what he has placed on himself to win this weekend's derby.

"I’ve only had support from the top," McCarthy added.

"When that question is asked, it’s always about the job. That's the meaning behind, 'are you feeling under pressure?'

"I fully understand that if you lose games you lose your job. That’s not what creates the pressure for me. What creates the pressure is the game against Swansea, to try and win it.

"I’m under pressure to get a performance and a result, if we do, that'll be brilliant, because that's what I want. If we don’t, I fully understand the rules of the game.

"I try not to let that pressure and all that noise behind me affect what I'm doing for the Swansea game."

Of course, McCarthy has incredibly fond memories of his one and only South Wales derby, a 1-0 away win back in March as Cardiff looked to continue their unlikely play-off run.

He will of course hope it's a happy hunting ground for him once again this weekend, when he needs a result more than ever.

With a fully fit squad, save Sang, and a striker in Moore who has just come off the back of a strong, goalscoring performance for Wales, the manager will hope the Bluebirds fans can come away with the bragging rights this weekend.

"I’ve had a few derbies in my life," McCarthy said. "They are always intense, high profile and I love that about them.

"If you can win them then they are brilliant. If you get beat in them it leaves you pretty low, even more so the fans, because it's important for them.

"Players and managers come and go but fans are always there. They like the bragging rights from the derby games."

McCarthy reveals his biggest derby

Mick McCarthy hopes Sunday's South Wales derby emerges top of the pile, but it is another fiercely-contested clash north of the border which sticks out as the manager's biggest rivalry to date.

McCarthy has been in the professional game 44 years and has seen his fair share of derbies, of that there is no doubt, and Cardiff City versus Swansea City is certainly up there.

He has fond memories of derby days, and some not-so-fond ones, of course, with the win down in Swansea back in March no doubt ranking highly.

However, it was a derby during his playing days that sits at the top of the tree for him, but he hopes a much-needed win over the Swans this weekend will usurp that Old Firm clash.

"I hope this one ends up being my favourite!" McCarthy said.

"But it’ll do a lot to top the Celtic-Rangers game, my final game when we won the cup. That was pretty special.

"But if we can win on Sunday, we might just top it."
