‘ Steven Caulker ‘

Wed Oct 06, 2021 6:29 am

Former Cardiff City defender Steven Caulker has linked up with the Sierra Leone national team ahead of his second international debut.

Caulker already has one cap for England, scoring against Sweden in a 4-2 defeat back in December 2012, but because the match was not classed as competitive he is eligible to switch international allegiance.

As an aside, Wilfried Zaha, another ex-Bluebird, started that game against the Swedes and has since switch his allegiance to the Ivory Coast.

The 29-year-old, from Feltham in England, has joined up with the Leone Stars ahead of their October friendlies against South Sudan, The Gambia and Morocco.

It is also thought the defender is hoping to play for Sierra Leone at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon in January.

The centre back made his name playing for Tottenham, while also enjoying loan spells at Yeovil, Bristol City and Swansea City, before joining the Bluebirds following their promotion to the Premier League.

He will be most fondly remembered for scoring the winner in the South Wales derby during City's first foray into the top flight.

Caulker is currently playing for Turkish top-flight outfit Gaziantep, on loan from Fenerbahce.

I was surprised by that, Ian..! :o

What a waste of natural talent. Started well with Spurs, he did very well for the Swans and probably more than okay for us (to a point) including a famous winner but very little since... :(
