James Rowberry and Neil Harris tipped for County job

Wednesday 6th October 2021

Cardiff City's first-team coach James Rowberry has been installed as the favourite to succeed Michael Flynn at Newport County.

The Exiles announced the manager's shock departure at the weekend after four-and-a-half stellar years at the helm.

It means that the League Two club are on the lookout for a new manager and among the list of potential replacements are two figures who will be well known to Cardiff fans.

Rowberry, who is yet to land a managerial post, tops the bookies' odds list, priced at 6/4, while former Bluebirds manager Neil Harris is a 20/1 shot.

The Rowberry name is synonymous with Newport. His grandfather, Jimmy Jenkins, was a key figure at Newport back in the 1970s and 1980s and was central in engineering moves for the likes of Tony Pulis and Glyn Jones to Bristol Rovers.

His father, Stephen, played for Newport in the early 90s, too, and Rowberry strode out as a mascot for the club during his dad's playing days. Rowberry's own playing career finished at Newport too, after spending some years of his youth at Bristol Rovers, a club he was also linked with managing before Joey Barton took the job.

Harris, on the other hand, has been out of work since leaving the Bluebirds back in January. Whether he would consider a drop down to League Two remains to be seen.

Next permanent Newport County manager odds:

James Rowberry: 6/4
Mark Cooper: 4/1
Wayne Hatswell: 4/1
Andy Morrison: 8/1
Paul Tisdale: 10/1
Sam Ricketts: 20/1
Neil Harris: 20/1
Kevin Nolan: 20/1
Darren Currie: 20/1
Michael Jolley: 20/1

Pretty ropey list of managers there would not want any of them at Cardiff except maybe that Neil Harris bloke he has got teams into the playoffs before.

Wasn't there a time when we nearly appointed Rowberry as our manager?
