'The subs definitely worked'

FT: Nottingham Forest 1-2 Cardiff City

Cardiff City manager Mick McCarthy told Sky Sports: "We were ineffective in the first half so had to change it.

"I said I'd give them 10 minutes to change things and they didn't, then the subs definitely worked.

"We'd had a couple chances but we weren't a big enough threat, what pleased me as much as anything was taking the short throw for the goal, and it was a great ball by Will Vaulks.

"I've spoken about Rubin, first time I saw him I said, 'Who the hell is that?'.

"He stood out like a sore thumb, thank goodness he signed with us, and he's got his full Welsh cap now too.

"Sam Bowen too, we've got some good young ones coming through.

"And Kieffer hit the post, his ball around the corner for Rubin was a touch of class, then Rubin did the rest."

On Chris Hughton's position at Nottingham Forest, McCarthy said:

"Chris would have loved to have slapped me today, he knows I wanted to beat him, but he's a good friend and he's done brilliantly wherever he's been but it's not for me to decide."
