West Brom fan banned for life over a racism remark

Thu Sep 09, 2021 10:08 pm

He is also going to be sentenced at the end of the month. Why is it I feel he is being made of an example?

Apparently he was having an argument with the West Brom player Romaine Sawyers on Instagram using his mobile. He text to Sawyers that he should be awarded the title "Baboon D'or". What he was meant to type was Buffoon D'Or and his solicitor claimed in court that "Auto Correct" should have correct it. It was admitted by someone in court, perhaps the prosecution, that it could have quite easily happened that the auto correct did not work. However, the judge shrugged this aside and accused him of racism.

Now this guy has never had any record of racism accusations. I'm not sure if any of his friends were in court to support that though. Even so, it does seem harsh to me as it looks like the judge has jumped to a conclusion early and that the main aim of all this is to use this guy as an example for the fight against racism. Now if the guy was doing monkey chants or was using stronger words like ni*^er then ye throw the book at him but this just seems a setup.

Sounds like a shit excuse the lawyer came up with.
A and U are no where near each other on a keyboard and in different directions when starting at B. And F is 1 row up and 2/3 keys along from B. Seems hard to believe that he misspelt BUFF so badly the phone thought BAB was closer :?

Are autocorrect programs standardised across different models of phone? Cause on my iPhone I've not managed to type a believable combination of letters that changes an attempt of BUFFOON into BABOON.

It seems the judge didn't believe him, as his original comments were in direct conflict with his Court account

Specialists agreed the predictive text was 'potentially' an occurrence but we'll probably never know

A life ban does seem extreme for what was essentially a two-way exchange

So after he sent the text and re-read it he must have obviously said "Sorry I meant baffoon".........thought not, it was pure bad luck that the predictive text selected a species of monkey to a black player.

Social media warriors need to understand there may be consequences and it's not a free for all, although this lad was unlucky to be picked out amongst the oceans of crap, much far worse than this that lives on social media

Another case but this time a bit more obvious resulting in a suspended sentence.

It will be interesting to see what this West Brom fan gets. He did not admit to it so could end up getting time unlike this other guy who admitted to it, he really didn't have much choice, and got away with a suspension.

No consequences for trolls and racists is why we are in this mess.

Yep its not a new thing there’s just a platform for them to spread their bile. Thankfully also means they can also be held responsible for their actions.

Good to have you back.

Did you ever explain away that yellow star comment? My thoughts were that it was categorising people as opposed to you linking it to the Holocaust.

It's an easy excuse to make.

If it was an autocorrect mistake, then why didn't he make that clear immediately and send another message to say what he meant to type? He would have seen what he had typed. That's what I would have done.

It sounds a little too convenient to blame autocorrect.

When he types something like that, with nothing significant to back up his claim it was a mistake, he has to be prepared for the consequences.

Agree with this. Can't blame the Internet, the problem is with society. Society has changed in that sense.

It's like when I think back to when I was a kid, and kids were punching each other but now they're stabbing each other.

It's not that kids have changed, it's that society has.

But if I stab someone when I'm drunk or under the influence of drugs, I'll still get punished. Should be the same if I am racist (either online or in person) to someone in the heat of the moment when I'm drunk or under the influence of drugs.

im not sure its punished is the issue.... the real issue is what is racism.....are there levels ? there are even for taking someones life.....its the elephant in the room ..racist seems to cover everything from a possible predictive text to discrimination in the work place to what used to be called paki bashing...
they are not the same ....

The judge would be terrified of not reaching that conclusion for fear of being accused of being a racist himself. We no longer have an independent judiciary in this country when it comes to matters like this. The guy may or may not be a racist idiot but a lifetime ban and possible prison sentence for someone who has possibly spent his life loyally supporting his team is an indication of the hysteria surrounding football and racism.

I wonder if anyone thought about the colour of Baboons' if this was supposed to be a racist remark?

I'm no expert on Baboons but a google search says that Baboons can be olive-green to yellow, silver and brown in colour depending on the species. Also nearly all Baboons have a 'white' coloured backside!

There is no actual black species of Baboon.

Now if this fella had compared the player to say a gorilla or chimpanzee then I think it is safe to make the racist comparison. But he makes reference to a non-black species of primate. Also say he called this player an orangutan would it be racist as this species of primate has an albino (very white) version?
