W.C QUALIFICATION EXPLAINED?

Thu Sep 09, 2021 10:50 am

Hope this helps.... :D
Basically if we qualify for playoffs by being best of runners up in group we have better draw than if qualify through nations league..

There are 13 places at the 2022 World Cup up for grabs in European qualifying.

The 10 group winners qualify automatically, while the other three spots are decided by play-offs.

Who qualifies for the play-offs?
The 12 teams in the play-offs are comprised of the 10 runners-up in Europe's World Cup qualifying groups, along with two teams who qualify via the Nations League.

Those two teams will be the best-ranked Nations League group winners who have finished outside the top two in their World Cup qualifying group.

Once the 12 teams have been determined, the six best-ranked runners-up in the qualifying groups will be seeded and drawn to play their single-leg play-off semi-final at home against an unseeded team.

To determine the six best-ranked runners-up, results against the sixth-placed teams in their World Cup qualifying group will be discarded.

If the top six cannot be separated by points, they are determined by the following criteria in order:

Superior goal difference
Highest number of goals scored
Highest number of away goals scored
Highest number of wins
Highest number of away wins
Lowest disciplinary points total based on yellow and red cards received by players and team officials (three points for a red card and one point for a yellow card)

Cheers for this. It’s only fair that results against the 6th place team are scrapped. I was thinking teams with 5 in a group were at a disadvantage.

Looks very likely we'll be playing our play off away then. Seems unlikely that we'll be one of the best 6th place teams

16 points (3 wins) might get us in there.

Didn't realise until read it that only another 3 go through from Europe groups out of 12 teams competing for places in playoffs... this is why a win last night was a must win game so why we did set up to do so that Im not sure as more points makes better standing in playoffs..... touch and go if we are at home in our games and if we get a fo called weaker teams to play

If we had won last night then a draw against Czech Republic would have been a decent result. We now have to win our next 3 and hope it’s enough. Don’t want to be needing to get something from the Belgium game. Not sure how it works if 2 seeded teams or 2 unseeded teams meet in the final with regards to the home tie.

Well theres 3 teams going through
so be the best one gets home game in the final games like in 1st game...

Now I've given the
" MAXIMUM" points all 2nd place teams can get as leagues stand today last group to hard to predict......
Can see what drawing last night means to our total.

Serbia 18
Sweden 21
Switzerland 20
Finland 17
Scotland 23
Holland + Norway 25
Croatia +Russia 25
Albania 24
Poland 23
WALES.........................19

Going to be close if we say lose to Belgium but win other games to be top 6 so get home game... obviously all teams wont reach figures IVE quoted

Serbia 18
Sweden 21
Switzerland 20
Finland 17
Scotland 23
Holland + Norway 25
Croatia +Russia 25
Albania 24

Interesting. It will be intriguing to see how this changes after the next 2 games.

This is why Wales are garaunteed playoff place through nations league Wales are 5th place to take playof spot based on their performances..... it would need 2 of these teams not to qualify as best runners up in their group to stop Wales having a playoff place...

France, Belgium, Italy, Spain,

you havent subracted points gained or possibly gained against the bottom nation in the groups of 6.....
eg...Scotland if they were to gain a 2nd place would currently be on 8 points { 11 minus the 3 already gained against the bottom team } with 4 games to play, one of which is also against bottom country Moldova so therefore can get a maximum of only 17 points...
