Friday 10th September 2021

Cardiff City are away to Nottingham Forest this Sunday :bluebird:

MICK McCARTHY:

Player availability?

We are looking pretty good actually.

Some are coming back today from international duty. None of them are injured. Ciaron Brown played Wednesday so he will have a recovery day.

On Isaac Vassell and Lee Tomlin who are both still injured, my only comment them.

UPDATED:

Lee Tomlin has felt his groin is still hurting so is now revisiting a specialist away from the club.

McCarthy

News on Vassell and Tomlin?

Not for back in the team, no.

McCarthy

"Isaac Vassell is self-isolating," the Bluebirds boss said.

"He did his thigh two weeks ago but now he is self-isolating because he is a close contact of someone who had Covid.

How was the international break?

All right. Just watching the lads and seeing how they’re all doing!

McCarthy

How would you describe the start to the season?

After the last result… it was OK. Before that it was great. Different feelings, a bit mixed.

MICK McCARTHY:

Going to visit Hughton Sunday…?

You can feel for them from afar, but when you’re up against them you’ve got to win the game.

Chris is experienced enough and he will have been working in the international break to ensure he gets back off to a good start.

I remember going up to Sheffield Wednesday after beating Swansea before the international break, it affects teams differently.

There’ll be nothing given and nothing expected from either of us.

MICK McCARTHY:

World Cup every two years, what do you make of that?

I only caught a bit of it last night.

If I’m a player who could play in the World Cup every two years I’d be delighted.

Personally, building up to a World Cup it takes a lot of organising. It’s the format I’ve been used to and I’ve never been looking to change it.

It was always really exciting as a kid and more exciting to play in one.

I don’t know (if it devalues it). I remember 20-odd years ago when Sky came and we were moaning about playing Monday nights and Sunday afternoons, having a whinge about that, and that went particularly well and changed the face of English football, the value of it.

At the time, the first division, clubs were skint.

Sometimes people don’t like change.

Who knows? I don’t know the answer to it and I’m not going to try and give one!

MICK McCARTHY:

Kieffer Moore, relieved he stayed?

Of course I was. You don’t want to lose a player who scored 20 goals the season before.

I’m delighted. I’m sure Kieffer would have been interested in playing in the Premier League – of course he was.

There was no offer that came in that was anywhere near the club’s valuation.

The value to me, the team and the players is immense, he’s been fabulous for us.

Re: MICK McCARTHY:

You surprised by the paltry offer?

MICK McCARTHY:

I don’t know why they don’t (table big offers). Waiting until the final few hours of deadline day and they think it’s the way to do business? I don’t think it’s the way to do business.

It makes everyone panic then. Everyone has a list. If that happens then we’ve got a list of 10 things that we might try, then other people have lists of things they might try. It just seems crazy to me.

If you really want someone you go out and get them. If you really desire that player and he is going to make a difference, you go and get them early.

MICK McCARTHY:

This division looks open early on?

Let’s hope so! We’ll all have a chance.

The top two are particularly strong with the squads they have and they can strengthen in January if needs be.

Looking at the league, we are playing Chris Hughton on one point, I don’t see them being there.

I’ve been in the Championship long enough to know it’s all sorted itself out already.

Surprised to see Forest where they are?

They have had issues with Covid. You can have a bad result and it can be followed by another one.

They’ve not played badly and they are where they are. They’ve not become a bad team and Chris has not become a bad coach.

I’m worried, not for Chris but for us, because all their players will be smarting.

No one will be turning against Chris because he is a great guy.

MICK McCARTHY:

Colwill and Harris, come back with a spring in their step. A big couple of weeks for them?

Yeah, Rubin started his first international and Harris getting a hand in the winner.

He said he probably should have scored but I told him he hit the target and kept it alive.

I was at the game on Wednesday night and I thought he was great when he came on.

It was a good sub appearance.

MICK McCARTHY:

Seeing them play, justification for your academy and under-23s?

For sure.

Rubin got his debut last year and sadly we have missed out on Isaak Davies. He would have been in and around it.

It’s the work TC does with them, especially Mark. It’s great.

It’s nice when the other academy lads see them get in the first team and an international cap. It’s great for them and great for the club.

Lee Tomlin absent

By Glen Williams

Friday 10th September 2021

Cardiff City posted a training gallery from their session on Tuesday and there were a few things eagle-eyed fans appear to have spotted.

Firstly, there appeared to be no Lee Tomlin out on the grass.

The playmaker has not played a minute of competitive football since October 2020, almost a year ago, and has featured only in under-23s matches and pre-season friendlies.

The near 33-year-old tweaked his hamstring after the 2-0 pre-season win over Newport County and is yet to feature in a matchday squad this season.

Then Tomlin was absent through an unknown illness, followed by a cold just before the international break.

It was hoped Tomlin would be back in training by now and playing for City's U23;'s today.

While it was hoped he would be back soon enough, there was no sign of him at The Vale in Cardiff City's training gallery on their website.

Tomlin has now only started 32 games for Cardiff in over four and a half years, this is Tomlins 5th season at the club where his contract runs out next June.

Importance of having Kieffer still around for others to learn off him?

MICK McCARTHY:

It’s vitally important that we kept him, as a team, a club, for everyone, the fans. Since he’s come here he has been terrific.

I was a bit surprised no one else came in for him.

If someone really values you and you really want them you go and get them if they’ve got the money.

But I’m glad no one did, it’s great we are keeping him.

How is Kieffer Moore?

MICK McCARTHY:

His first day back was yesterday. I know he looks after himself but he’s not been football training.

He missed a bit beforehand having had Covid.

He came back and had his game against Bristol. This is his first day back really.

He can’t be up to full speed. He has not been on the grass or doing football training.

I’d expect him to be wanting to get 20 goals and showing everyone what they’ve been missing.

I've lost complete trust in MM.

What a benign press conference.

For an attack to lose junior, Murphy, Whyte, Ojo and Wilson and replace them with a converted left back loan signing is in my opinion, negligence

Of course Colwill and Evans ... The only two youngsters who could fill those positions may turn out to be magnificent, but it's a lot of pressure on them and one gets the feeling that he will still stick with Bacuna in an attacking position

So disappointed in with transfer window

Perhaps. But let's see how the season pans out

Our only hope for this season is that two or three of the youngsters have wonderful seasons.

But if we do miss out on the play offs I think it's right that we look back at this transfer window and see the mistakes we made .. i.e. leaving our squad completely devoid of pace and creativity.

I hope I'm proved wrong but unless the youngsters come through, I just can't see us doing much at all this season. We just haven't got the guile and pace..

pace, creativity ,experience we are short of everything.... but managers do not have magic wands either......2 years ago what we have would be looking a good bet for a relegation scrap, the only thing changing that is there are so many other clubs also with next to no money....
