Jay Bothroyd

England one-cap wonder Jay Bothroyd was called up by Fabio Capello whilst playing in the Championship for Cardiff City in 2010 and his nomadic career has been just as bonkers.

The 39-year-old has been playing in Asia since 2014 having gone without a club for six months after being released by QPR.

Former England striker Jay Bothroyd has spent the last five years playing in Japan for a host of clubs
He played in Thailand for Muangthong United before moving to Japan where he spent two years with Jubilo Iwata and then arrived at current club Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo.

He has a contract with the club until the end of January and has an impressive record for the club, scoring 39 goals and providing 20 assists in four seasons.

Enjoyed Jay's time here and another classic example of how Dave Jones could get the best out of a maverick player...

Frustrating at times, too much time spent on his backside feeling sorry for himself, but he certainly knew where the goal was and did very well for us overall

The England call up and subsequent appearance was well deserved and a feather in both his, Dave Jones and the club's cap...

Sadly, his head was turned after that and following the disappointing finale to that season, Jay decided he would be better off elsewhere and that proved not to be the case in actual footballing terms

Fond memories overall and good to see him still playing at a rioe old age (for a pro footballer)

I think it's true to say that Jay had his best spell of football at Cardiff and enjoyed himself immeasurably.

A shame we never got promoted with him and a team full of wonderful players. It was often the best football I've seen us play.

Jay had everything.. pace, power & finishing.

He’s coming to watch us play soon according to his Twitter account.

He was an intergral part of probably the best side we have had since i started watching the City and i have been doing so for 50 plus years. Apart from Bothroyd we had Bellamy, Chopra, Whittingham, Marshall, McNaughton, etc for the whole season and for various parts of it Ramsey, Drinkwater, Koumas and i seem to recall Ross McCormack. What a side!! How didnt we walk the league?

I remember we won 4-0 at Leeds at end of October. It was on Sky and we looked unstoppable. We then lost at home to the Jacks i think and seemed to hit a slump.Dave Jones- who I cant fault for his style of football- seemed to have this habbit of being unable to pull us out of a bad patch. Think there were issues off the pitch as well towards the end of the season. Shame because it was a great side.

How we didn't even get promoted, I'll never know.

I would also include Olofinjana in that, who I think was one of the best loan signings we made. Made us a better team.

In the other end of the scale, the signings of Bywater and Samuel proved to be woeful. Bywater gave Dimi a run for his money, in terms of bad goalkeepers.

The thing is, it's the fine balance of attractive football and success.

Most of the football we played under Jones was brilliant to watch, but he will go down as a failure because he failed to get us promoted when he had a great squad for several years.

Our football under Warnock wasn't easy to watch at sometimes but he got us promoted and very nearly kept us up.

Then there's Malky when we won the league in his second season. Our football was more entertaining than under Warnock but nowhere near the level as to when Jones was in charge. He may well have kept us up as well, we'll never know.

One thing I'm sure of is that if Jones had got us promoted, he would have kept us in the Premier League for at least the first season. We could even still be there now if that happened.

Good thread this and I agree with all your comments chaps

Great thread.

I have a theory that if we had gone up with that side, we would have stayed up and perhaps established ourselves as a decent premier league side.

Jones ... Great football under him but he was absolutely useless in Derby games and the slumps were too frequent.

Yeah I'd go along with that.

Sadly Warnock's approach to the game isn't compatible with premier league football. As proved throughout his career. The job at city went to Malkys head without anyone at the club reigning him in.

Great point about Olofinjana... Often overlooked when we discuss that side but he was our Patrick Vieira that season.

too many flawed diamonds...quite a few of that team had the ability to have been playing at a higher level and would never have played for us had they been model pros..

I agree with you over Olofinjana who was outstanding in the first half of the season in particular and added spine and control to the midfield. I hadn't forgotten him - i couldnt spell his name!
