" Cardiff City Players out of contract next summer "

Tue Aug 31, 2021 6:00 pm

Our club have some big decisions to make ahead of next summer, as we have a lot of players out of contract.

Bringing this up now due to the reported interest in Alex Smithies and Josh Murphy.

My opinion is it would be best to get a fee for them now and get them off the wage bill, instead of getting nothing for them next summer.

They are both unlikely to be given new contracts.

We would be able to replace them with loans or free agents.

All of the following are out of contract next summer along with their weekly wage:

Aden Flint - £15,000 per week

Sean Morrison - £23,000 per week

Josh Murphy - £25,000 per week

Joe Ralls - £25,000 per week

Marlon Pack - £9,000 per week

Alex Smithies - £33,000 per week

Lee Tomlin - £19,000 per week

Isaac Vassell - £9,000 per week

Will Vaulks - £10,000 per week

Got the wages from a website, so can't be 100% certain they are correct.. I'm sure someone on here will be able to clear that up :thumbright:

Well that clear why they want Smithies and Murphy off the book. Tomlin because he has not been productive enough also needs to go.

I wonder if they have Ralls on the radar too?

We will struggle next season. Flint, morrison, pack, ralls and to an extent vaulks are the spine of the team. It will be very hard to replace their experience. Murphy, Tomlin and vassel will be a huge relief on finances though.

You're probably right, I hope so.

Would be ridiculous if Smithies was still on upwards of £30,000 per week.

I wonder how much of Josh Murphy's wages Preston are paying if anything?

100% Tomlin over £20,000 a week he had a new contract and it rose again.

Yeah I did say in December that Bamba, Bennett and Hoilett would be gone from the club this summer and you replied to that in the same way hmmm.
As for the latter the reality is that no one wants them, one is mobile with no end product and the other 2 are one dimensional and slow for today’s football. :ayatollah:

Yeah I’m not having a go it’s just something I remember you saying and you wrote it as if you knew for a fact instead of just your thoughts!

I agree over Bacuna although he can do a job as a squad player in a deeper role.
Ralls is decent and rightly plays every game.
Pack is a player I like. Doesn’t get the credit he deserves on this forum IMO.

Roger, what can I say! He couldn’t hit a barn door let alone the net. Usually out of position wherever he plays ( headless chicken comes to mind) the equaliser if I’m right at Fulham in the play off after we scored he was supposed to be RB and was no where near it when they equalised. To many moments like that and I’d expect more from an extremely well paid footballer.

If get a new manager in perhaps bacuna will be played in position that suites him rather than where a manager wants him to play? End season perfect chance to remove most of these players and change our manager and philosophy new start is needed, no garauntees but at least something different from the defensive minded managers we have had recently.... if can get new owner be perfect restart for club

We should resign the players we want and try to sell the ones we don’t in January otherwise they’ll all go on frees in June! Again a shed full of money wasted?

Why would any club want to buy them, when they can have them for free in six months.

Would you offer Smithies £1.7 million a year, Ralls and Morrison £1.2 million, Tomlin a million and Flint £900K... If not why would they sign for you ?

just can't believe the Smithies salary

Nobody wants them at the wages they are on.

Most of them will have to take a drastic cut in wages when they are released or retire because they can’t get a club. The days of players earning stupid money are on the way out and they’d better wake up and smell the coffee :ayatollah:

Next season is a definitely a worry.
Some of our players next season might need a note off their their parents to stay out late

Another way of looking at it ,with all those players out of contract a good opportunity to rebuild and change our style of play

Seeing what some of our very average/ injury plagued/ under performing players may be earning is very depressing.

Does it make me feel better that clubs up and down the country are in the same boat? Not sure.

May be we will look back and see the pandemic as the reality check the industry, not the game, needs.

I believe the football Ponzi scheme will shortly start to break up. There appears a vast amount at the very top, but these are corporate entities or sovereign wealth funds of some dubious countries using the club to promote their country, what is in it for the rest of them?

When you look at the value of the playing assets they are simply wrong. I wonder what the book price for Smithies, Ralls, Morrison, Flint or Tomlin was because as we proved over the summer (I am guessing everyone was up for grabs) no other club thought there was any value in them.
There were very few championships to championship money transfers, no one except those with parachute payments have any money. The days of the sugar daddies is well and truly over.

What is in it for Vinny or his kind? You make it to the premier league and your income vastly increases but so do your costs, you get relegated and your income reduces drastically but you still have a lot of residual costs.

There is not one player who is out of contract who'll end up playing at a higher level club than ours, i would have said Morrison and Ralls two seasons ago but age is catching up with Sean and Joe hasn't looked that great for 18 months.

I am not worried at all as there will be similar level players from all over the championship available and obviously those the premier league do not want who will have to accept that £700K a year is a nuts salary to kick a football around a park.

Agree completely. Apart from the bit about Ralls playing at a higher level. If there are any more benefactors out there like Walker was at Blackburn or Heywood for Wolves who want the best for their own club theyve needed ridiculous wealth. Maybe the reset will help. And as you say, our departures will be replaced by players who have been overpaid by other clubs. Be interesting to see how much motivation older players will have on their next contracts on half the coin, or less, they've been on. But then for most it will still be astronomically more than more typical employment.

Also agree with your observations about book values. Lunacy. Same for the stadium too. Who else will buy it.

Bringing this up now due to the reported interest in Alex Smithies and Josh Murphy.

My opinion is it would be best to get a fee for them now and get them off the wage bill, instead of getting nothing for them next summer.

They are both unlikely to be given new contracts.

We would be able to replace them with loans or free agents.

All of the following are out of contract next summer along with their weekly wage:

Aden Flint - £15,000 per week

Sean Morrison - £23,000 per week

Josh Murphy - £25,000 per week

Joe Ralls - £25,000 per week

Marlon Pack - £9,000 per week

Alex Smithies - £33,000 per week

Lee Tomlin - £19,000 per week

Isaac Vassell - £9,000 per week

Will Vaulks - £10,000 per week

Got the wages from a website, so can't be 100% certain they are correct.. I'm sure someone on here will be able to clear that up :thumbright:

Surely Bacuna must be on that list? His time must be up. Terrible signing at the time. He’s been a sheer waste of money.

I recall reading that Bacuna was signed on a five year contract! More cardiff city transfer lunacy.

And in that case, our manager, Darren...!

Not knocking Mick McCarthy, as I've now realised he is on a hiding to nothing for this season and (possibly) next; but he won't change his style of play and/or approach to games
