A huge positive for our wage bill. But he's in my opinion our best keeper

Massive risk to think Ratcliffe can step up as a first team player

i dont think there is a lot in it , but we certainly dont need a 30k a wk player sat on the bench....

Re: Smithies to Sheffield United

Nobody can deny someone of Smithies ability is not going to want to sit on the bench, and his wages are high.

To say we have Radcliffe however is a nonsense. Our philosophy therefore seems to be that every time we lose an experienced player we'll just chuck another kid in.

We will need a goalkeeping replacement adequate to cover as a first team keeper in the event of Phillips injury.

Sell, and replace with kids, sell and replace with kids, sell and replace with kids.....When I watch matches I want to see a first team, not an under 21 team that simply cannot compete.

If Tan gets his way mind, I'll be using my hard earned cash watching an u-19 or an u-17 team at this rate.

Let me just say it is NOT great to see youth coming through at the moment and I'm at the point of saying Tan is now taking his revenge at not being able to keep his beloved, and wretched red.

We need experience and need it NOW.

Changed the record on the red we've been to the Premiership in blue since, warnock spent a fortune since the change too .

so..hypothetical ..if we were to move Smithies out and that allowed MM to bring in 2 x 10k a week players you would prefer one to be a keeper ?
id prefer to go with Radcliffe myself as the chances are he wouldnt play much anyway and strengthen our outfield....

The problem is we won't use any money that we receive to strengthen any part of the team.

Re: Cardiff City’s Alex Smithies to Sheffield United

Tue Aug 31, 2021 5:37 pm

If true, I'm not too disappointed in this.

Can see us bringing in a loan for back-up and that wouldn't need to be done today.

Smithies is on good money and would probably go at the end of the season when his contract expires.

Better to get a fee for him now and off the wage bill.

Re: Cardiff City’s Alex Smithies to Sheffield United

Tue Aug 31, 2021 5:42 pm

Does anyone else think that there should be a week's grace period after the transfer window for loans?

I mean some clubs will be forced to sell players right up until the window closes and then have no option to bring in a replacement

Also players who thought they would play suddenly find that their club has brought in a few players ahead of them and they are then stuck down the pecking order with no option to move on.

Surely it would make sense for the permanent transfer window and loan window to be a few days apart
That would at least allow clubs to bring in loans and players who did t get a permanent move and those who need to move to play, get a loan option?

Surprised this hasnt happened a lot sooner to be honest. Not much between him and Phillips and I Think smithies was our highest earner in the prem on near 30k a week. Massive saving for us plus a fee hopefully. Is there time to bring 1 or 2 in if he goes???

We need so many, and we can now simply add a keeper to that list. As poor as Murphy has been poor during his time with us, we simply cant loan him and not replace.

Let's see what the next few hours hold. It is heart breaking as a Cardiff City fan seeing clubs strengthening with experience even by getting in free transfers while we rid ourselves of experience and quality and replace them with kids who will take us to the brink of relegation.

Moreso, let's offer them long term contracts...... it beggars belief, it really does.

Sam Hammam would NEVER let this happen to HIS club.

Not enough for Tans liking, and if MM won't play them, Tan will force his hand by selling experience meaning we will have to play them.

I used to love the transfer window.....

No, used to love it until about 2 years ago, when it seemed clear what our ongoing player policy was going to be....

didnt really answer my question.... i think we are thin on the ground myself and therefore moving out one or even 2 high earners who MM doesnt pick anyway for a bit of strengthening was the best i thought we could hope for...

I apologise.... I think if Smithies goes, a keeper becomes a necessity, so yes, even though we need the money to go elsewhere.

As I understand it, had been interest in both Josh Murphy and Alex Smithies earlier today. Both seem to have gone cold in last hour or so.

As for Kieffer. Wolves interest might well be there, but City waiting on a firm bid

Murphy's contract ends 30th June 2022 there has been much interest in clubs wanting to loan him which is crazy, they need to buy him, as loan him for the season and then he moves on a free same for Smithies :banghead:

well if your not having offers to purchase getting the best part of 3 mill off the wage bill for 2 players who are not playing is the next best thing surely ?
