MY VIEW " MICK NAMED A STRONG TEAM AGAINST A WEAK BRIGHTON BUT CITY WERE KNOCKED OUT OF THE CARABAO CUP AT THE SECOND ROUND

"

We should be disappointed. That team named by Brighton was very weak and we named a strong team.

City played alright, but the Brighton goalkeeper never had to make a meaningful save.

Disappointing night but a big game on Saturday to continue our strong start in the league :bluebird:

Mick McCarthy named a very strong side but gave full debuts to two academy players, Tavio D'Almeida and Sam Bowen :thumbright:

Josh Murphy, Ryan Wintle, Alex Smithies and James Collins also started.

Brighton made a lot of changes and it was a weak team named by Graham Potter.

Smithies, Ng, Morrison, Flint, Nelson, D'Almeida, Bowen, Wintle, Vaulks, Murphy, Collins

Moder gave Brighton the lead in the 9th minute

Cardiff were the better team in the first 20 minutes but there were no meaningful saves for the Brighton goalkeeper to make

Sean Morrison was injured in the first and had to be replaced by Oliver Denham

We were the better team in the first half but 1-0 down

HT: 0-1

City started the second half brightly with Collins and Wintle going close in the opening minutes

Zeqiri added a second for Brighton in the 55th minute

Moore and Colwill came on in the 66th minute

City continued to attack but never really tested Steele in the Brighton goal

FT: 0-2

Ned,
We certainly did play a strong team and were sadly totally outclassed.

Enjoyed out over all , but just shows how much quality we are lacking.

I personally don't think it was that strong a team tbf, a lot of "fringe players such as Murphy Wintle , Vaulks, and two debuts to boot from youngsters, people are forgetting, the gap between the prem and championship is growing, in terms of squad quality? We certainly unable to compete with 99%of the prem in truth, Brighton have a good academy in situ, and have the quality in depth, sadly we don't yet.
We have youngsters showing promise imho, and I for one will be grateful if just two make it as regulars, don't get me wrong, more would be nice (and may well happen) if a few more made it too, but after not producing for however many years, there may be some light at the end of the tunnel on that score :occasion5: :old: :bluebird:

I wouldn't say it was a weak Brighton side , just because there were no famous names in it . That "weak" Brighton side would probably cope very well in the championship .

It might have been a weak team by Brighton's standards but the team they put out was not weak and cost way more than the team we put out and probably more than the cost of our first team. Mwepu cost more than £20m and Zeqiri and Moder cost about £10m between them. It just shows the massive gap between our two clubs. And if we weren't robbed at home to Chelsea it would have been us who survived that season. Who knows where each club would have been if that had happened!

Brighton even played a 16 yr old.

I spoke to a Brighton fan in the Sand Martin and he said No way would his team tonight start like that in the Premier, he actually thought we would beat them.

They obviously wouldn't start that team in the premier league but that team would do very well in the championship, such is the gap developing between both leagues. What Brighton paid for some of the players in that team is way more than the cost of our team.

So Cardiff’s second string is a strong team but Brighton’s second string is a weak team? What a load of nonsense.

Ultimately Brighton made 11 changes from the team that started their last league game so basically it was 11reserves Was it a team that would do very well in the championship or did we just make them look a lot better than they are don't think there is any definitive answer. There were some positives to take from the game.

First Bowen looked good almost ready for first team football if not ready. Trouble is he is yet another central midfielder and we are overloaded with them anyway. Tavio looked good too but though he did not play there he is yet another central midfielder. Dereham looked promising too and more usefully he is a central defender who can play right back.

Think we have a strong squad but there is a glaring weakness up front if Moore goes. For me if Moore goes the season is over as far as any chance of promotion is concerned. Disappointed in Collins's finishing so far given how well he played pre season. If we sold Moore and Collins got injured we simply wouldn't Have an attack at all.
