The Bluebirds have only been defeated three times in 25

Wed Aug 18, 2021 8:39 am

The Bluebirds have only been defeated three times in 25 competitive appearances since Mick & TC took over in January 2021.

MICK McCARTHY:

“It think that says that my team has great desire. We went two-nil down and we had an awful spell. We were playing awful. I’m not going to hide away from that.

“I made some changes. We went to 4-4-2. I’m not suggesting for one minute that’s the way we should play all the time but it suited us. Gilo (Ryan Giles) put cross after cross in. I thought Rubin (Colwill) made a difference. All the subs did. Big Kieffer (Moore) did. Sparky (Mark Harris) did.

“It shows a great resilience, I think. A toughness and a willingness to not be beaten. I always say if you can’t win the games, don’t get beaten. And I think they’ve taken that on board with spades to be honest with you.

“At the end of the season, you can win promotion or get in the play-offs on goal difference. So getting two goals back and getting a point can make such a difference."

I thought Colwill in particular made a huge difference when he came on.

Not many defeats but one hell of a lot of draws. Since the six game wining run at the start of his reign 5 wins 12 draws and 3 defeats. I said at the start of the season I would have bet good money on us drawiing more games than anyone in the championship possibly anyone in the football league and we are already joint top of the draw table appropriately drawiing with Milwall. No prizes for guessing the result in our match with Milwall. The most number of draws in a season is 23 which Norwich managed in a 42 game season I predict we will beat that this season

We drew 23 games in the late nineties but that was over 46 games and was in League Two.

Like he says, if you can't win then don't lose :thumbright:

But as said above, there are a lot of draws in there.

Once we have Kieffer Moore and Rubin Colwill back to full match fitness, we will have a lot of options. Moore was knackered for half of last season because he had to play 90 minutes nearly every game. But now we have Collins to bring on when Moore is getting tired.

Mark Harris also gives us a completely different option to those two.

Colwill can play in Bacuna's position or Giles' position. We also have Murphy as another option.

Isaac Vassell and Lee Tomlin are probably not going to play much unless they can sort out their fitness issues.

Spoilt for choice in central midfield with Pack, Ralls, Vaulks, Wintle and Bacuna can play there. Don't be surprised if Wintle becomes a first team regular as the season goes on, I think that's very likely going by what I've heard.

Plenty of central defenders with Flint, Nelson, Morrison, McGuinness and Bodenham can also step in from the U23s if needed. McGuinness is injured at the moment but it won't be a long-term injury and is already close to being ready to play again.

No issue at right back. Perry Ng is the obvious first choice and Tom Sang has impressed when given a first team chance so he's a good back up.

The problem remains at left back and that's the position we really need to sign someone. Giles can obviously play there but he's needed further up the pitch. Joel Bagan is still learning and there have been some improvements. But even if he's to be our first choice, we need to sign a back up. I think we need to sign an experienced left back or a Premier League loan and give Bagan more time. But not Joe Bennett, it still doesn't sit well with me that he thought it was acceptable to demand a similar wage to the one he was getting before - considering his injury. I expect many at the club think the same, even if he would take less money now.

Aside from that, Isaak Davies and Kieron Evans from the academy look to be getting closer to working regularly with first team training.

So we have plenty of options which will restrict fatigue and hopefully enable us to turn the draws into wins.

But the promising thing is how difficult we are to beat.

We do have potions my slight worry is that MM has a bit of a not losing mentality and will often stick with the risk free option in not wanting to lose a game rather than go all out to win it say by playing two forwards at the same time. If we stick with playing just one forward every game all game I suspect there will be plenty of draws.

Ned not sure it matters who we pick as I've said before MM needs to be more positive in tight games its these games we have drawn simply because he wouldn't take any sort of risk hence all the draws...... last night was good example 1st half we just held our ground inside our own half relying on breakaway it failed once they scored but it took until 75th min to change things sufficiently for us to make progress ... when drawing games last season he wouldn't make such changes so ended up as draws .. but as you say now got Collins and Harris to help out Moore who hopefully wont be flogged to death this season. :old:

The problem with MM is that his line up and tactics is not to lose the game rather than being positive and try to win the game. We have already lost 4 points against two sides who we should be beating if we’re serious about promotion! The same happened last season after an excellent early run,MM seemed happy not to lose and only made late substitutes when he thought we might lose rather than making changes to win games!
