Mick McCarthy laments Cardiff City's sloppy defending in Peterborough draw

The Bluebirds boss was furious with how his team handled the start of the second half but praised their character to earn the draw

Mick McCarthy rued how his Cardiff City side defended after the half-time break which allowed Peterborough to steal a march and net two quick goals in the 2-2 draw.

The Bluebirds were hit for two goals in as many minutes after the break when Harrison Burrows and Siriki Dembele scored to give Posh control.

It took a late double from Aden Flint to ensure Cardiff came away from Weston Homes Stadium with a point, but while McCarthy was clearly happy to come away having not lost the game, he was still furious at how his side defended after the break.

MICK McCARTHY:

"It was downright carnage, disgusting, not right, it shouldn't happen," McCarthy said of Peterborough's quick double.

"But the players feel that way as well. They have all come in disappointed, disgusted with the fact we conceded the two goals we did.

"Good, I'm glad. I'm glad they feel that way as well, because it made us look bloody awful for 10 minutes and another 10 minutes further on, until we got the subs on and changed it around.

"We got a response and we saw the worst and the best."

That could well prove to be an important point, though, later on in the season.

Cardiff have continued their unbeaten start to the campaign and the 2-2 means they head into the clash with Millwall in confident mood.

And McCarthy at least praised the Bluebirds' show of spirit in the dramatic draw.

"The response the lads showed, it shows the team spirit, desire and willingness to work hard," he said.

"They showed [character] last season, with 10 wins, nine draws and three defeats. They showed real character and they've not lost that.

"The results we've had so far helps to build that. The belief.

"It knocked the stuffing out of us ,the first 10 minutes of the second half, but the response was terrific."

Cardiff City boss Mick McCarthy told BBC Sport Wales:

"It certainly wasn't the intention to leave it late like that - although it wasn't the intention to start dreadfully in the second half and find ourselves 2-0 down either.

"I'm disgusted at the manner in which we conceded the two goals and we looked absolutely awful at that point.

"It was panic stations but we got ourselves something from nothing really, so I have to be delighted.

"Flinty (Aden Flint) was excellent and we know what he is capable of. We had cross after cross after cross in the last 10 minutes and you're always going to fancy Aden, Sean (Morrison) or Kieffer (Moore) if they can get up early."

Big Mick totally at fault last night.
It clearly wasn’t working and his stubbornness to change things nearly cost us. Collins huffed and puffed, but was ineffective, especially when being supported by Bacuna who clearly is not an attacking player. Huge difference when Harris, Colwill and Moore came on. We looked a threat and I don’t think it was because Posh were tiring. It’s not often Morrison is out muscled, but Clarke-Harris had the better of him for most of the game.
Still not sure as to why Keiffer doesn’t start? It wasn’t until the 63rd minute with City fans screaming for him to be put on, that Mick woke up from his catatonic sleep in the dugout.
So glad we didn’t let Harris go. Play him as a 10.

Moore's had covid and the Euros so is knackered apparently!

Agree they made a massive difference, hopefully he will be ready to start again soon!

Agreed; but they had an in-form (pre-season) Mark Harris who could have taken over from Collins, who worked his nuts off for two games... :thumbright:

Chris MM should have made 3 subs in the 50th minute, not as late as he did

75mins was far to late to put the other two subs on minimum was 65 mins but normally managers change things soon after that 2nd goal sent in? If did so wouldn't have been surprised if we had won game

Given our record at London Road over the years, I believe we have won only 1 of 12 visits and that was in 1986, getting a draw from 2-0 down is a result. We have played Peterborough Utd 23 times and only won 6 of the games so they really are a "Bogey" team for us. I did laugh when the so called experts on Cardiff City TV said at 2-0 down it was "strange" losing at a ground where we are accustomed to getting a result :o Really.

Peterborough have also won 5 times at Cardiff over the years so I'm not really looking forward to the reverse fixture where history says we can take nothing for granted.

We were lucky last night and I think MM can thank DF as much as his players for the final result as his decision to take off both Dembele and Clarke-Harris changed the game as much as our substitutions. But 4 points from 2 away games is absolutely fine and keep that going and we will be pressing for a top 6 place.

For me the best news was MM saying he thinks KM is now ready to start, better news is if he gets his head around Bacuna is a better CM player than a forward. Colwill time or Harris with KM in a 4-4-2 should be the way to go starting Saturday as Millwall will be no walk over.

Clarke-Harris and Dembele were awesome once they sussed out how to play against us. Peterborough played some lovely stuff on the ground and worked very hard winning what seemed to be all the 2nd play in midfield. For me it was obvious they were going to get tired and fortunately they did. We took advantage through desperation and got the result we did not deserve. Relieved is the outstanding word.

This is the problem with MM. Ipswich fans alluded to it from his time there. He is as stubborn as hell. If he thinks Bacuna is an attacking midfielder he is going to play him as an attacking midfielder even as fans are screaming for him to taken off the pitch. He has his favourites and they get to play week in week out seemingly regardless of whether someone else can do a better job. As for subsistutions it is an infallible rule that none are ever made before the 65th minute.

I think MM is A decent manager we could do a lot worse but we shouldn't be blinded to his faults.
