What is Mick McCarthy thinking right now?

Fri Aug 13, 2021 7:59 pm

Mick is nobodys fool that is a given. He has however come out with some outlandish statements that surely even he cannot believe to be true.

"I'm happy with the transfer business"

"I have an abundance of talent"

"We have strength in depth"

"We had a budget"

So, what does MM think about our club And his own position?

1. He is worried that he is damaging his reputation as a hard man that says things as they are, and that he can't impose himself as he wants. He is not being backed even minimally, and he can't carry on with this charade.

2. He is smirking at his employers recognising them for what they are, whilst paying him a good wage. He is happy to be a mouthpiece for the regime because at the end of the day it's a very good job.

I'll be perfectly honest in my thoughts here. MM knows full well what he is dealing with, and if he is happy then I'm worried. Very worried.

Very true let's just hope MM is a better manager than us fans? But have serious reservations about his philosophy of do not lose at all costs ......it cost us last season and way hes talking about this season it will be more of the same? Rather lose more if means winning games we are drawing as we drew far to many games we could and should have won

Mick's a kidder, straight out of the Warnock School of Kidology

Only time will tell and I hope he's still 'got it'; but I felt more confident when the Sourcerer himself (rather than the apprentice) was at the head steering the broomstick

We’ve been promoted to the Premier League twice with a “do not lose” attitude. Don’t knock it.

And by the same token, relegated twice.. we refuse to be patient and build a team that can stay up.

Not sure you'd call it do not lose attitude? more A strong defensive attitude..... micks his definitely if cant win dont lose attitude result is we drew games should have could have won with a bit more positivity? This will cost us again if he does the Same this season which seems likely given what hes said.

To me it is , because we should go out to try and win all games, that's how to get promotion, he does have a tendency to set up not to lose imho, time will tell, and it's way to early to call for his head, we are 1 game in . :old: :bluebird:

Far to early to cal for his head .... you can only go by what he says and how we play and both more than illustrates his philosophy and safety 1st is commendable but like you say winning games is way to promotion....... you see so many teams fail becsuse they've drawn to many games

Re: What is Mick McCarthy thinking right now?

For me it’s relatively simple.
All clubs have a budget and with the last 18 months , no one seems to be spending the cash and working with what they have got .
So if we do have an abdunance of talent they use it to win games by setting up and playing to win .
The best way to improve the finances surely is to get to the PL

I don't agree that nobody is spending money. Stoke immediately spring to mind. £5.5M on one player? Others have signed free players in numbers and are happily paying salaries in the region of an average championship wage.

You'll find that teams ARE spending money.

All depends on what the £5.5m is spent on. Not so long ago we spent £5.5m on Robert Glatzel and that didn't exactly work out to well as did the £6m we blew on Gary Madine.

In fact you could argue that Mark Harris has achieved at least the same if not more than those two and he is an academy graduate.

One awful player there and one unlucky one In my opinion.

Yes it does depend on who it is spent on, but they had the money in the first place to decide what they wanted to do with it, which is 100% more than what we can do as a club.

Personally 5.5M on Surridge is a risk, but who knows? He scored on his debut......

And yes, Harris has achieved more than Madine, but despite his lack of goals, Harris was not in the same league as Glatzel however poor or unlucky Glatzel may have been.

Serious question, what do you honestly expect him to come out and say? I'm sure he was aware of the financial situation the club was in before he signed his contract. What is there to gain from publicly criticising the club? A breakdown in relationship between a club and manager only goes one way - sacking the manager. Which would be a financial disaster.

Micks hand has been forced with bringing in so many youngsters. We seen last season he would rather not use them, even when we had nothing to play for. Do you expect him to come out and say these lads are shit and we have no hope? Hardly a confidence boost to youngsters he may have to rely on at some point. Last season, when it was going bad, you wanted to see a few youngsters brought into the team. Now it's an issue it might Happen.

The business we have done has been decent. We would all like to see more players in, as I'm sure mick does as well. But thats the financial position the club are in. The alternative is spending beyond our means and risking financial stability. People moan about our debt and then moan about lack of spending.

I'm not sure he did know the complete story of what he would be working with, particularly this season. However, for the record, I think your first paragraph is most valid.

Can he say the guys coming through are not the standard required? I think he would of a number of years back. Agreed, you have to man manage effectively, but I do believe he can still manage the press, the fans and the players while avoiding some of the bewildering comments that make him look silly.

Maybe we can agree to disagree when saying the transfer business we have done is decent. Time will tell of course and you may be right. I'm making a thread on other teams business in the transfer market this year as I don't think we have performed as well as a number of other clubs.

Be interesting to know what other teams have done in window do know stoke paid 5m for a player but that is the exception deals mainly hovering around a million but not many of them either.... think need to see what happens next season when clubs are in better position financially... our signings are differe from previous types of players we bring in so hopefully they will enhance us ...

2mill for a championship back up striker plus 4m if we won promotion which having just picked up 8 points from the previous 8 games looked anything but nailed on.. ....we won promotion mate... we needed back up.. we won the majority of games he played ..and picked up 100 odd mill..

and how much have Stoke reduced their wage bill by releasing players ...and how much did they get for the boy they sold to Burnley ?
i think our squad is too thin by a margin too but its no good comparing things that are nowhere near like for like...

Flip it on its head a lot of teams over the years have tried to play 'the right way' in the championship and fallen flat entirely.

Derby last season being the first that comes to mind but there are plenty of others.

More than one way to play the game and as someone else said same style as Mick's got us up twice (and nearly kept us up under Warnock).
