Friday 13th August 2021

McCarthy said that the Bluebirds were happy with their transfer business so far and, as things stand, they would not be looking to make any more signings this summer.

MICK McCARTHY:

“I happy how the transfers have gone this summer.”

“I have made three free transfers and a loan is proof that we have we have no money available.”

“I have all positions covered and an abundance of talent brought through from the Cardiff Academy.”

MICK McCARTHY:

Injury report -" Mark McGuinness has got a knock and Ciaron Brown has got a knock. Whether they will be any good to me or not I don’t know.

Otherwise we are all right.

We have had a bit of a cold going through the camp.

Pretty much everybody is OK. Not Ciaron, his ankle is bad."

Lee Tomlin says he will return to training next week sometime.

Isaac Vassel not feeling well at the moment.

McCarthy

If you sell Brown, you reinvest the money you receive, if he left?

MICK McCARTHY:

I’m not sure we’ve got any to spend.

A cold?
You cough in a room and everyone scarpers out! No, we have all been tested.

McCarthy

Any players impress vs Sutton?

The players needed games to be honest. Sean needed to play, Ryan Wintle needed to play, Will Vaulks, Mark Harris, they all did OK, ended up winning the game.

The ones who came in did well and needed minutes.

If you don’t give them minutes, when do they get them?

McCarthy

How’s Kieffer?

He is all right. He is getting his fitness and his touch and back to playing.

You can be fit but he has not played any football for a long while.

He got through it, fitness-wise he is fine, but just needs the feel of the ball and the game.

MICK McCARTHY:

Marley Watkins, couldn’t have done much more?

He’s on that short-term deal. We will see, we’ll let it run its course.

He did well the other night.

But if everyone is fit up top. That is a big if, we have got Kieffer, Collins, Rubin, Josh Murphy, Ryan Giles. We are pretty strong in those areas.

You only need a couple of injuries and it soon weakens the strength of it.

MICK McCARTHY:

Watkins is in contention though?

It is unusual.

Marley will be the first to admit he has missed a bit through injury.

But with the rules as they are only allowed us to play in two pre-season friendlies, which strikes me as bonkers.

He played at Bath and got injured and played a bit-part in another and the only way to assess him was to sign him on a short-term deal.

MICK McCARTHY:

Kieffer and Collins together?

If we play 3-5-2 they can play together. We will see if we can play 3-4-3. Collins played there at Luton, he is more adaptable.

If there are two strikers up top they might be a potent force.

McCarthy

In the mix to start?

Yeah, absolutely, they all are.

MICK McCARTHY:

Blackpool?

Judging on their start. I watched the Bristol City game yesterday. They were very competitive in that.

They hit the post, they play a good brand of football, pass it out from the back, have momentum from getting promoted.

Then played Middlesbrough and bashed them 3-0!

They will be very confident. A tough game ahead.

MICK McCARTHY:

Important for first win?

Always important.

We can’t just dismiss Blackpool that’s for sure - nor Peterborough.

Two teams have come up and got momentum from it. We are going there to try and win it, that’s all we can do.

Away form is superb…

Absolutely. We go away to win games.

I always say that a point away from home is a point in your pocket, especially now with your crowds.

But let's see how we do.

MICK McCARTHY:

Do crowds make a difference?

It does for the home teams. Our crowd were brilliant on Saturday.

On merit Barnsley deserved a point, but we would have won the game if we took the chances.

MICK McCARTHY:

Transfer window open, any sign of any activity?

No, not really.

We’ve got five centre-backs, six midfield players, experienced ones, wing-backs we are in pretty good shape.

The left side is different but I know Ryan Giles can play there. And I know the forward options.

MICK McCARTHY:

Any players outgoing?

Isaak Davies, Rubin Colwill won’t be going anywhere. Mark Harris, there’s quite a bit of interest in him but, equally, he is playing in my team and in my squad, I don’t see that.

Sam Bowen, we have got five or six midfield players but I’ve been delighted with him.

We are lucky to have so many players in different positions.

The issue is still Covid. You get your squad down to 24 and you only need to get Covid and have four or five players who are isolating and we would be stuck.

Pretty much those youngsters train with the first team and that’s improving them more than training with the under-23s or the under-18s and that’s a great asset for them.

It’s a brilliant learning curve.

So, to answer your question, I don’t know. They are the reasons why probably not. But there might be someone that goes out on loan if we’ve got adequate cover everywhere else.

Kieron Evans is another one who has been excellent for the under-23s.

Vassell and Tomlin?

"Isaac had his first 90 minutes in a couple of years on Tuesday at Leckwith and got through it OK."

"I think Isaac is not feeling well at the moment, so i left him out for the Sutton game, if he feels the same today, i will leave him out for Blackpool game, then he can try and get fit next week."

"Lee Tomlin says he will return to training next week sometime and feels he will be ok by then."

MICK McCARTHY:

Isaak Davies close?

He keeps threatening to come back. His ankle was bothering him and then his thigh.

He was on his way back and then he got a knock again.

The problem is, especially with a young lad, he was so eager to get back. He was close to making his debut. He needs to make sure he is 100 percent. So not quite sure.

MICK McCARTHY:

Ciaron Brown, confident he will stay?

His agent is doing a good job isn’t he?!

I did say, and I’m not in the habit of messing around or spreading bull, Middlesbrough offered and it’s no where near enough.

If they offer the amount the club wants, then they will decide to sell him.

If not then he will stay until next year and he will leave on a free transfer if he does not sign a new contract, which he has been offered.

There has been one other club interested in him, to my knowledge, because I’ve spoken to that club.

Whether he has got any interest in going there if they do come in with a bid I don’t know. But the bids are nowhere near.

I saw Atkinson went from Oxford to Bristol City and I know he signed a two or three-year deal, but he went for £1.3m. A left-sided centre-back.

We are not looking at anything like that but they are going to have to bid more than they have to take him.

MICK McCARTHY:

I’m not sure we’ve got any to spend.

Replacing Ciaron… Warny is not daft by the way! He is double cute! He has been around a lot longer than me.

He sees Ciaron Brown as exactly what he did for us last year, left-sided centre back, left back and left wing-back.

If he can get him for what he’s bidding then he’s got a very good player… so why the bloody hell should I sell him to Warny! Or let him go there unless the recompense gives me the chance to replace him.

If not, it’s not happening. I can’t be any straighter than that.

Ronan Curtis?

Mick McCarthy:

That’s probably because he played for me in Ireland. We haven’t got the money to buy him. What is he, £3m? We’re not buying him. We’ve not spent anything this summer.

We’ve gone with Mark McGuinness, who I think is a really good signing. He has started really well and I’m delighted with that.

Then we took a loan player and frees. James Collins is a great free for us - as Ryan Wintle will prove to be.

But we’ve not splashed the cash and we’re not going to do it now.

Mark Harris attracting interest

Cardiff City boss Mick McCarthy has revealed there is loan interest in young striker Mark Harris.

After breaking into the first-team fold last season the forward will be looking to kick on this term, but with a number of attackers at McCarthy's disposal he'll have some job on his hands.

Kieffer Moore, James Collins, Marley Watkins and Isaac Vassell are also on the books.

MICK McCARTHY:

Asked at his pre-Blackpool press conference if there has been any interest in his young players this summer, McCarthy replied: "Isaak Davies, Rubin Colwill won’t be going anywhere. Mark Harris, there’s quite a bit of interest in him but, equally, he is playing in my team and in my squad, I don’t see that.
