" Mike Riley, Michael Oliver & Anthony Taylor explain VAR "

Thu Aug 12, 2021 7:14 pm

Good couple of videos below.

Explanations about VAR with Premier League referees Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor - they both went to the Euros as well. They are two of the most experienced Premier League referees.

The man in charge of the PGMOL and referees, Mike Riley, also talks.

Good to see referees finally being given a chance to speak for themselves :thumbright:

First video is talking about VAR in general:

Second video is explaining the rules changes in VAR:

All well and good ned but it still depends on interpretations of events? What i would prefer is to see refs making the decisions not var? Particularly when ref is standing 3yards away and doesn't
see anything wrong but var looks at it in super slow mo giving a totally different picture of what actually happened..... but live in hope they improve on last season?
Ps are we having a wkend var watch thread like last season?

Encouraging that Mike Riley said there that they'll go to VAR less often this season.

Also good that Michael Oliver said that the referees want to do the games like they were done in the Euros by not giving a foul for every little bit contact.

I think people would understand referees more if they were given a chance to speak in public, like they have here. Important to remember they're football fans too, that's why they got into the sport - Oliver mentions supporting Newcastle in one of those videos.

But I agree, when it comes to interpretation it shouldn't go to VAR.

Also.. I'd bet my house on there being a VAR topic on here this weekend due to controversy - probably even tomorrow during the first game at Brentford

I'll be 1st In que to have my say? :laughing5: but lets hope they crack down on my main complaint of var slowing down incidents in penalty area where attackers deliberately put foot in way of defender who doesnt see him and is only trying to clear ball and var gives penalty that as got to stop! As it is at worst accidental and never use to be fouls..
