Two former promising academy stars have found new clubs ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

One has joined Merthyr & the other South Shields of the Northern Premier League Premier Division, both on permanent contracts.

Merthyr Town have announced the signing for midfielder Frazer Thomas, the 18-year-old who scored the winner in the mini South Wales derby.

Frazer Thomas was expected to go along with with his former club Cardiff City after shining last season for the Bluebirds.

The manager of the Southern League Premier Division South side, Dean Clarke, said: "I'm really pleased to get Frazer's signature over the line. After some good competition, I'm delighted to win the race to sign him, he’s an exciting talent with loads of potential.

"He’s creative with a lot of energy and as the fans have seen in pre season, he can chip in with goals too. "

It comes after last week Jack Bodenham signed for South Shields.

Bodenham, 21, was always a consistent performer in the Bluebirds academy and captained the club at all age groups, but never really got a fair crack of the whip at senior level.

Bodenham was sent out on loan to Hereford and TNS during his time at Cardiff City and was a consistent player for Cardiff's U23's las season.

The Northern Premier League Premier Division side expressed their delight at the former Wales youth international's signing and the player himself is excited about the new challenge ahead.

“It’s great to be here," the defender said.

“From the moment I started speaking to Graham (Fenton, the manager) about joining the club, everything about it seemed really exciting and it was something I wanted to be a part of.

“The club seems to be going in the right direction and it’s exciting to be part of the group now.”

Good luck to the pair of them hopefully they will work their way back up the league ladder.
But have to question why Bodenham (21) in particular was still on our books if he's having to drop down to the Northern Premier to find a club.

Probably shouldn't still have been on our books to be honest. Think he had an ok spell on loan at Hereford but nothing that great and was also on loan at The New Saints. A good thing if we are clearing out players who won't make it at championship level.
