MICK McCARTHY REALLY HAPPY: “ABUNDANCE OF TALENT”

MICK McCARTHY: “WE HAVE AN ABUNDANCE OF TALENT NOW”

Cardiff City youngster Tom Davies came in for much praise from his manager and colleagues following his debut against Sutton United.

Wednesday 11th August 2021

Davies, 18, emerged as a bolter in pre-season, impressing Mick McCarthy with an "outstanding" display against Cambridge United and catching the eye with other cameos thereafter.

The teenager's inclusion in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night was certainly an exciting one and added further to the wealth of options McCarthy has sprouting through the youth system.

Davies started a little shakily, which can almost certainly be put down to nerves, misplacing the odd pass and former Brighton winger David Ajiboye also just got the better of him to set up the first Sutton goal.

But after that, he certainly impressed. His left foot is incredibly cultured and he always showed for the ball confidently out on that left-hand touchline.

One glance at his statistics after the game also make for some pretty impressive reading, both offensively and defensively.

At the back, he made eight clearances, two interceptions and three tackles. At the top end of he pitch he produced two key passes, hit one successful cross and contributed an assist, to boot.

He almost got his first Bluebirds goal, too, when he smacked a lay-off from Curtis Nelson on the edge of the box to send the ball careering towards the bottom corner, only for a sprawling Sutton defender to miraculously keep it out.

But, after a nervy start, it is fair to say the Wales youth international is yet another exciting academy product who, alongside 19-year-old Joel Bagan, will form part a youthful and exciting left-hand side for the Bluebirds this term.

MICK McCARTHY:

"A mention should really go to Tom Davies, who I thought was excellent," McCarthy said after the win over the Us.

"He was playing against the number seven, who was arguably their best player.

"Myself and the staff are giving [the youngsters] the opportunities.

"We could probably do with about 23 or 24 players around the squad.

"So to have Tom Davies come in like he did, to have Kieron Evans around the place and Sam Bowen, Rubin, it's really pleasing those youngsters from academy are showing enough that I want to include them.

"It's great that we now have an abundance of talent from the Academy and we can rely on them in our first team squad.”

“It is a very different landscape to years gone by. The average age of the squad at the training ground must have been driven right down to early twenties by now and, as a result, that squad value will only shoot up in years to come.”

And Tom Sang, who put in a typically-assured performance on the other flank against Sutton, subscribes to the school of thought that the future is certainly bright for Wales' capital city club.

TOM SANG:

"Tom had a really good debut," Sang said of Davies after the match.

"He looked so calm and composed, so I’m made up for him.

"There are loads of young players now – every Friday before a match we have a ‘young vs old’ match, and I’m nearly on the ‘old’ team because there are that many young lads, which is great to see!"

We struggled in our pre season friendlies against the lower league clubs, played awful against Barnsley and struggled to beat Sutton, way to much pressure on our young ones. Never heard of any club suddenly out of know where producing eight quality championship players with in a year. This has Harris written all over it yet again

I thinks it’s great to see all these youngsters coming through :bluebird: I do agree though incredible we have so many at once, the rest of the league must be wondering how we produce so much talent so quick.
Got to be top two or six at very worst if the squad is this good :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Many fans have been saying that we need to try out our younger players to see how good they are and MM is now doing this. I realise his hand is being forced but our youth are at last being given a chance.

Im happy with this change in direction

We are a in the football business.

Like it or not. Money doesnt grow on trees, always managers spunking stupid cash on shit, puttong our club at risk.
We needed a different way. We have it now.
But it may take a few seasons
to bed in.
We may have a few blips but keep the faith...

Go on Mick.

With the current squad we won’t get relegated but also won’t reach the playoffs

It a season of mid table mediocrity because we don’t have enough creativity

Hopefully, we will finish the season with 3/4 of the youngsters as 1st regulars, that the best we can hope for in my view

A fair assessment.
We’ve had high expectations for a few years due to our recent success. Probably time to reassess our strategy.

and the previous direction...?
if actually good enough they progressed...which as we know has not happened and neither have those being released been snapped up by other championship clubs ..
so is this change of direction enforced knowing its a downgrade or do we genuinely have boys much better than previous years... bit early to judge although ive seen lots of over hype over some performances ..and also lots of CEOs, chairmen and managers at other clubs all claiming the same thing about their kids as we are.....
have they all been getting it wrong for the last 100 years and its just a case of chuck em in and it will work ? or were they correct but skint at the moment

The change of direction has been forced due to previous players’ (and some current) inflated wages and a general lack of funds available at present.

cant argue about wages being inflated but its how football is structured...you will always have a few clubs with money pushing the market and the rest to some degree will have to follow ...its needed a reset but this im afraid is not it....its just going to create a bigger gulf between the championship and EPL and it was already to big

Abbundance of talent we should be wiping the likes of sutton off the park then and thrashing them
We all let the infant school years ago
I wish managers would speak to fans who also have some football knowledge and give a bit more respect rather than thinking we are bricks.

Agreed.

Perfect season to start blooding the youth in my opinion and develop a longer term vision.

I'd be happy with a season of actual development and a mid table finish. As long as we can stay away from danger let the youth shine through.

As said by many above, a ridiculous statement to make. We have an abundance of youth players is factually correct. The more MM talks the more he appears to accept being Tans mouthpiece.

Not what I thought MM was like.

As has been said, if we have produced 8 kids of championship quality all of a sudden, then clubs must be frightened to death of our quality. Sutton United didnt appear at all bothered so I doubt ANY championship club will be concerned at our sudden emergence of talent.

I remember watching Bale playing left back for Southampton against us in the year that he broke into the first team and Paul Parry gave him a torrid time. Very few youngsters get into the first team and set the world alight immediately. Our hand is being forced so some won’t be good enough but hopefully some will.

Going to need them? Brown and McGuinness out for 2 to 4 weeks according to MM :?

Monty I agree that McCarthy talks bollocks by bigging up the players he has but we beat Sutton. I also don’t believe we have a strong squad like he says.

These games are always difficult …..

Blackburn 1 Morecambe 2
Forest Green 2 Bristol City 2 (FG go through)
Ipswich 0 Newport 1

I agree not easy but we did field almost a first 11 not a load of subs

If I was a young player learning the ropes, how i would love a nanager who had my back...

Yes, this is financially forced but
Had been a long time coming.

If good kids come to us because they can play, then hopefully we will make
Proper money on transfer fees.
A premier league team we are not. We were one season wonders...

Best we have is cup runs at the moment.
Will be a long time (if ever) that most EFL clubs can compete with premier clubs financially.

Its fckn obscene...
