MY VIEW:McCARTHY WAS NOT GOING TO LET CARDIFF CITY BE EMBARR

Tue Aug 10, 2021 7:51 pm

MY VIEW / OPINION:

MICK McCARTHY WAS NOT GOING TO LET CARDIFF CITY BE EMBARRASSED TONIGHT 7 FIELDED MANY OF HIS STAR PLAYERS.

CARDIFF CITY TONIGHT FIELDED A VERY STRONG TEAM AND PUT CITY IN TO ROUND TWO :bluebird: :bluebird: :bluebird:

But it was not without a fright as Sutton United lead for 44 mins.

New Signing Marlon Watkins (free agent) scores two goals on his debut to save Cardiff City's blushes.

First-half: Sutton United started well and dominated the early periods and were leading for 44mins, Marlon Watkins saved City's blushes and equalised 44th min.

Second-half: Cardiff City took control and the quality shone through to put Cardiff through to Round 2, but Sutton did cause City quite a few problems :bluebird: :bluebird:

Cardiff City welcomed league new comers Sutton United now playing in League 2.

This was the first ever competitive match between Cardiff City and Sutton United, with the Bluebirds winning six of their last seven League Cup games against teams in the fourth tier (L2).

CARDIFF CITY 3 SUTTON UNITED 2 :thumbright: :bluebird: :bluebird:
H-T 1-1

Cardiff City: Smithies; Sang, Flint, Morrison, Nelson, T Davies; Vaulks, Wintle; Watkins, Moore, Harris.

Subs: Phillips, Ng, Bowen, Pack, Colwill, Murphy, Collins.

Sutton United XI: Bouzains; Barden, Rowe, Goodliffe, Millson; Ajiboye, Eastmond, Davis; Wilson, Beautyman, Bugiel.

Subs: House, John, Korboa, Boldewijn, Kizzi, Bennett, Smith.

4th min:GOAL! Cardiff City 0-1 Sutton United (Wilson 4)
Goal! Donovan Wilson taps home!

David Ajiboye is found by a long ball by the keeper and squares a cross to the backpost, where Wilson nips in front his man and taps in.

45th min: GOAL! Cardiff City 1-1 Sutton United (Watkins 44) :bluebird: :bluebird:
Goal! Marley Watkins with a goal on debut!

Mark Harris' cross was superbly brought down by Kieffer Moore, who lays it into Watkins' path. The forwrad swings a left foot at it and connects well. It's straight at Bouzains, but it slips through his fingers and into the back of the net.

H-T 1-1

Great save by Smithies, one hand.

WHAT A GOAL :bluebird: :bluebird:

50th min: GOAL! Cardiff City 2-1 Sutton United (Watkins 50)
Goal! Watkins with a lovely strike!

If the first was a little fortuitous, this certainly wasn't. A properly nice strike, that one.

The ball is laid into his path 20 yards out and he bends his shot low and hard into the bottom corner. Well-taken goal, that.

78th min; Watkins off, Colwill on.

Harris off, Murphy on.

84th min: GOAL! Cardiff City 3-1 Sutton United (Murphy 84) :bluebird: :bluebird:
Goal! Josh Murphy with City's third!

86th min: Moore off, Collins on.

89th min: GOAL! Cardiff City 3-2 Sutton United (Rowe 89)
Goal! Sutton pull one back.

He capitalises from a goalmouth scramble and tucks it home!

A poor start but the team got the job done in the end.

Good to not go out in the first round.

Also pleasing for Moore, Morrison and Colwill to get some minutes.

Cardiff very poor against a team playing conference football last season. More players needed in middle of the park otherwise we will struggle massively this season . IMO tan doesn’t give a toss about CCFC . Wish he would just sell up f**k of and let someone decent run the club

Just seen the replay of Sutton Uniteds goal, Davies was left well behind on the wing, we’re going to struggle if we don’t get a quality left back in, can’t rely on young Bagan all season, Mick needs to sign Bennet while he’s still available

Sutton United were denied a shock win in their first EFL Cup game as Marley Watkins scored twice on debut to give Cardiff City a first-round victory.

BBC

League Two newcomers Sutton led after just four minutes as Donovan Wilson finished a swift counter-attack.

They had chances to extend their lead but Watkins equalised with a shot which Dean Bouzanis should have saved.

Watkins curled in a fine second goal and Josh Murphy added a third before Coby Rowe's late consolation strike.

It was a memorable debut for former Bristol City player Watkins, whose signing on a short-term contract until the end of August had only been confirmed an hour before kick-off.

His two goals offered relief for a much-changed Cardiff side, who eventually got their act together after a ragged first-half display.

As for Sutton, theirs was a vibrant performance which will give them encouragement for their first campaign in the English Football League.

For many, Sutton are best known for their shock FA Cup win over Coventry City, then of the top flight, when they were still a non-league side back in 1989.

Then last season Sutton won the National League title to earn promotion to the fourth tier of English football for the first time in their history.

Their League Two debut was spoiled by Forest Green Rovers' injury-time winner on Saturday but, against a Cardiff team showing nine changes from their Championship draw with Barnsley, Sutton sensed an upset might be in the offing.

Matt Gray's side seized the initiative and took an early lead, as David Ajiboye skipped past Cardiff's teenage debutant Tom Davies and crossed for Wilson to score with a first-time sliding effort.

The goal was no fluke, as Sutton proved with a purposeful display which led to chances for Kenny Davis and Harry Beautyman.

Cardiff were a shambles and it took a goalkeeping error by Bouzanis to bring them level a minute before half-time as he weakly palmed Watkins' shot into the net.

There was little the Sutton keeper could do about Watkins' second, an arcing low shot which the home forward guided into the bottom corner, and Bouzanis was also blameless as Murphy cut inside from the left wing and scored with a deflected right-footed shot.

That was the end of Sutton's hopes of an upset but they gave their travelling fans one last cause to cheer as Rowe scored their second goal in the final minute.

Define decent. Presumably you mean someone who will spend millions keeping the club afloat. Oh wait a minute, Tan already does that. Maybe decent means someone who will spend billions of pounds of his own money on the club and want nothing in return save for the pleasure he gets making fan's dreams come true. Get real mate.

In terms of decent I mean an owner who knows how to run a football club , VT /MD doesn’t! he in fairness has spent a lot of money on CCFC but the board are a shambles and clueless . Obviously a lot of clubs won’t spend big which is fair . MM stating in his press conference tonight his business is done . This squad will finish no where near the top 6 . Simply not good enough attacking wise . IMO Cardiff need another winger and a Att Mid as tomlin isn’t considered 1st choice for CCFC

Ned got up be happy got through been quite awhile we done that against lower league teams..... and I'm sure other championship clubs not so lucky tonight against lower league teams... but as usual even a win is not recieved well.... not best performance but what's best play well & lose or play indifferent and lose.:?

I agree with you that recruitment has been p*ss poor. We all know what we need, but as I said a few week's ago, MM wouldn't know a good footballer if he saw one. To be fair to the board they got exactly the right manager to stop the slump last season but we knew that he was never going to sign up ball players this season, even if the board had given him a few quid to spend. He's an experienced, pragmatic manager, who only knows how to put together a team of battlers. No frills, no skills, that's us for the time being I'm afraid.

Define what you mean by "knows how to run a football club"

You state we need another winger and attacking midfielder so 'knowing how to run a football club' would involved spending more money we don't have on these players and infringing 'Profit and Sustainability' rules (aka Financial Fair Play)?

If that is what you mean then that is a very odd interpretation of 'running a club properly'

Clinging on vs a team in div two and playing conference football last season is hardly inspiring irrelevant of the team put out by Mm but we come back and won. When josh Murphy come on it made me think I bet he's on what nearly all there team are per week but Credit to Sutton eitherway.

You’re right it’s hardly inspiring but we did win unlike …
Blackburn, Bristol City & Ipswich who all played Lower league teams.
It happens a lot.
