Peter Ridsdale makes Leeds United and Cardiff City compariso

MY VIEW:

NOT ONE PLAYER THAT CAME THROUGH CARDIFF CITY ACADEMY DURING THE RIDDLERS COUPLE OF YEARS WERE DOWN TO HIM, ALL WERE SAM HAMMAMS PLAYERS COMING THROUGH A FACT.

And Joe Ledleys career started in 2004 under Sam, Sam was still at Cardiff till 2007.

Peter Ridsdale makes Leeds United and Cardiff City comparisons with PNE youth prospects

James Milner and Alan Smith blossomed at Elland Road, while Aaron Ramsey and Joe Ledley came to the fore in the Welsh capital during Ridsdale's time at both clubs, saying Cardiff's academy had an abundance of talent.

Peter Ridsdale believes Preston North End have a head coach in Frankie McAvoy who will give the club's youth prospects a chance as he drew parallels with his time at Leeds United when youngsters were given Premier League opportunities.

North End appointed McAvoy as the club's new permanent boss over the summer after a great spell in interim charge.

He took over following the sacking of Alex Neil and won five of the eight games he was in temporary charge of PNE at the end of last campaign.

During his first pre-season in the hot seat at the Deepdale club, McAvoy gave the club's younger players the opportunity to impress.

It includes the likes of right-back Josh Seary, midfielders Noah Mawene and Lewis Leigh, as well as striker Joe Rodwell-Grant.

Ridsdale, advisor to PNE owner Trevor Hemmings, knows what it is like to see a talented group of youngsters emerge at a club from his time at both Leeds United and Cardiff City.

The likes of James Milner and Alan Smith blossomed at Elland Road, while Aaron Ramsey and Joe Ledley came to the fore in the Welsh capital.

And in McAvoy, Ridsdale believes North End have a boss who will give youth a chance.

He told the club website: "I think when you’ve got young players, you've got to have a football management team who prepare to give them a chance.

"It’s strange because we’re being criticised from certain quarters in the past, probably fairly, as we've had some good lads and they probably haven’t had as much of a chance here as opposed to being sent out on loan.

"I come from a background where everybody knows we had an exciting crop in my days at Leeds with so many young players that were playing Premier League football at 18 years old.

"Similarly at Cardiff we had two or three players like Aaron Ramsey and Joe Ledley who came through the academy and got first team action very quickly.

"During my time at Cardiff, Cardiff's academy had an abundance of talent."

"I think to be fair to everybody, for the first time we genuinely have players at 16,17, 18 who are knocking on the door of the first team already and I think that’s a pleasure and I think we’ve got a head coach who will give them the chance.”

I forgot a significant fact.

There was one international friendly game in which 5 Bluebird players played they were : Gabbidon , Ginge (Collins) , Weston , Ledley and Earnshaw . We were then still in the 3rd tier ( now called the 1st division). Three were 100% directly from our youth as for Gabbidon and Westin we bought them from WBA and Arsenal at a very young age having never played for their clubs - practically they were ‘youth’ and therefore we invested in them. Of course there were other youngsters.

Ha a little bit of Ridsdale rubbing off on you mate.

Both Gabbiadon and Weston had played first team football for West Brom and Arsenal respectively.

Yes my mistake and I apologize . Weston had played one League Cup game for Arsenal and Gabbidon had played forWBA. However , let us not miss the main point I was making and that is that we had 5 of our players playing for our Welsh national team when we were still in the third tier. This says a hell of a lot. By the way - this was not in the Ridsdale years but in the Sam years.

The excitement when we signed Weston. Then it went crazy when we signed Gabbiadon and saw him play.

They were good times.

Not sure if it says a lot about how good our players were or how bad the Welsh team were to need to use 5 players from the third division.
