Variable attendances in the EFL

Mon Aug 09, 2021 4:13 pm

Some interesting crowds across the divisions this weekend:

31,549 - Sunderland v Wigan (League One)
29,043 - Sheffield United v Birmingham (Championship)
21,037 - Ipswich v Morecambe (League One)
20,843 - Coventry v Nottingham Forest (Championship)
19,068 - Stoke v Reading (Championship)
18,729 - Bristol City v Blackpool (Championship)
17,639 - Charlton v Sheffield Wednesday (League One)
17,431 - Cardiff v Barnsley (Championship)
16,249 - Derby v Huddersfield (Championship)
16,127 - QPR v Millwall (Championship)
16,087 - Bolton v MK Dons (League One)
16,058 - Fulham v Middlesbrough (Championship)
12,452 - Preston v Hull (Championship)
10,260 - Blackburn v Swansea (Championship)
10,019 - Luton v Peterborough (Championship)

A few were bigger than expected, but I'd say some were quite a bit smaller.

City's crowd of 17,431 was well down on the last five pre-Covid games at the CCS (22,393 v Brentford, 21,273 v Nottingham Forest, 21,287 v Wigan, 22,518 v Reading, 22,516 v West Brom).

Cardiff the only club in that list that didn't sell there tickets a few weeks before coz of dopey drakeford , hopefully be over 20k next match which I think would be good in current circumstances.

Well hopefully Wez, next home crowd is 25,000 as it would be 30,000 if in Prem :thumbright: :bluebird:

But the Barnsley game was advertised massively to over 200,000 on City fan base and to 50,000 on all
My groups .

I think the fact it rained heavily around 12 o clock will have put many off. I think we would have hit 20,000 if the weather was good :thumbright:

Re: Variable attendances in the EFL

The last time City played 'unfashionable' Barnsley at home it was in early-December 2019. The attendance back then was 21,380.

Meanwhile, when City last played a home game at this time of year (10/08/2019), it was unfashionable Luton who were the visitors. The crowd that day was 24,724.

Re: Variable attendances in the EFL

Tue Aug 10, 2021 3:13 pm

I think the main reason for the low attendance 17,000 last Saturday for City was the drop in season ticket numbers, which tends to happen gradually after relegation ( some bought in the hope of prem football 2 years back, then it was the hope of promotion)

A couple of years of fairly bland football and no real hope of a promotion challenge, plus ticket office closures, confusion, lack of exciting signings, lack of ambition by our board etc and it’s a few thousand down again.

Slightly worrying and a pity we couldn’t win as a good start would have helped , anyway roll on Millwall home and should get at least 20,000 as City fans know how to buy their tickets now   I wonder if they had found how to buy them quicker if type had been Liverpool home

Re: Variable attendances in the EFL

Tue Aug 10, 2021 3:21 pm

Derby have not been permitted to sell season tickets, hence why the drop in attendance badly for them 16,000 plus uncertainty about their future and their still chance of points deduction hence looking at virtual relegation then.

2 crowds in the our division were above 20000 11 crowds were below 20000
