Vincent Tan: Owner 'committed' to seeing Cardiff 'grow'

Sat Aug 07, 2021 8:27 am

Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan remains "fully committed" to the Championship club insists chairman Mehmet Dalman.

The Malaysian businessman has been Bluebirds owner since 2010.

Tan has been unable to travel to attend games due to the pandemic while Dalman said that he is often asked by people whether the 69-year-old plans to sell the club.

Tan has only been able to see live four Cardiff games in just over four years due to other commitments.

"Someone who keeps pumping money like that man does, I just don't think you can question his commitment," he said.

"He's enthusiastic, loves the team and watches every game regardless of what time it is in Malaysia.

"He's still fully committed to seeing this team grow and see if they can get promoted."

"Of course if someone comes in with a good offer for the club, it will be considered like all businesses."

Tan's 11-year reign as owner has been eventful, including the controversial rebranding which saw the club play in red as well as two separate spells in the Premier League.

Dalman acknowledges the fact that Tan does not attend every Cardiff game does lead to some questions over his continued interest in the club.

'We will remember fans we have lost'

"Most football club owners are chairmen as well as owners and they are more or less there every game," Dalman told BBC Radio Wales Sport.

"Vincent on the other hand is incredibly busy, it's been a turbulent couple of years in Malaysia because of the pandemic and he's not able to get here as much as he would really like to.

"But I talk to him on a daily basis and he's fully committed to seeing this club grow.

"People keep asking me is he going to sell the club and I don't hear that from him.

"I don't know if you've noticed recently but we also appointed a new board member.

"Jalil Rasheed has come on the board and Jalil is the first person to be appointed as CEO of the Berjaya Corporation outside of the Tan family.

"Having him on that board is a great asset for us."

'I have a lot of faith in him'
Cardiff missed out on last season's Championship play-offs despite an impressive second half to the season under manager Mick McCarthy, who replaced Neil Harris in January.

Dalman said himself and Tan were pleased with the work the former Republic of Ireland boss was doing at Cardiff City Stadium.

"The man's got a very positive attitude. What he wants is clarity and I like to think we give him that clarity," Dalman added.

"He says he's very happy with the bunch of lads that he has at the moment and I have a lot of faith in him.

"He's very experienced, knows that league very well and he's great to work. I'm enjoying my relationship with Mick enormously."

I'm not sure I'd buy a second hand car from Dalman.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Dalman could sell snow to Eskimos given how some of our fans always seem to believe his interviews.

its not much different to what all chairmen / CEOs are saying , or what he has said every other year bar a few name changes...

bottom line its been a downgrade..

Its 1 thing saying it and it's another meaning it. I have no doubt that Tan will remain the owner of our club but I also understand that he is busy in Malaysia trying to recoup the businesses that may have suffered through covid. So it would be nice for him to show his face at a game or 2 but understand why he is not.

Dalman should not treat the fans as idiots. We may not all be financiers or business people, but we can see when a club and a team is thriving. We can see when the club or team is forward looking.

We are a stalled car, and everyone is passing us by while financiers play at being car mechanics and tinker with the engine and get some brown tape and elastic bands to solve the problem.

The deeper CCFC get rooted into The Berjaya Group, the further away from the fans, and the further away from reality the club gets.

Absolutely Spot on Lee :thumbright:

I dont believe one word he says and for me he talks exactly like a politician and promises so much, but never delivers.

That’s a really good post mate.

I have heard that long term plans, are being put in place, that is why this new guy was brought in! Perhaps this is the man to deliver on promises made?

Roger, Sorry to be sarcastic, but ive met Dalman many many times and over the years he keeps saying new plans are in place, etc etc etc

I honestly do not see a future under this present regime / committee.

Thats why I said puzzled at the moment going nowhere but standing still? I've said need change of regime as that appears to be only way club will go forward long term... for past 6yrs we've been living season to season in the hope of getting to premier league but then we fail to capitalise on it when we have..... cant see that changing with this regime as its stuck in a time warp of defensive minded managers when we need a forward thinking one backed by a new regime

Have to agree with this. I would add, when each season doesn't bring promotion we cut back more and spent less.

Warnock was a masterstroke in fairness. He could work off a limited budget and players with limited talent. For me, as good a manager as MM is he is not Neil Warnock.

Mm as is strong points but they are do similar in attitudes to how we play? Both made us high scorers believe bit irnotwe were 4th last season and NW NW think we were better....But due to their defensive minded attitude we failed to win when we should have because we didn't attack vulnerable teams? Prime example was NW at Fulham p waited until 1 down before deciding to attack them this result probably cost us stating up .. now got MM with attitude if not going to win musnt lose to me that puts fear into out team to go for a winner unless we are losing game.... if only win fraction of drawn games we would been top 6 even if lost more.. same problem with Harris hence need to go for a progressive manager not necessarily a young one.

NW in fairness had more flexibility than MM.. not much but enough... he was allowed to bring in Sol and Hoilett... Micks flexibility stretched to Johnny .... and the cost cutting wasnt where it is now.....
