OUR GREATEST EVER BLUEBIRD DESERVES A STATUE

Tue Aug 03, 2021 6:54 pm

Peter Whittingham was our greatest ever player and deserves to have a statue at the front our our stadium. Because he was the heartbeat in Cardiff City whenever he is at the club or just visiting he will always remain our greatest ever bluebird and i just think he needs a statue as well as renaming a stand after him. What you guys think?

I don't agree that he's our greatest ever player.

But he was a very good player and a big part of our club for a long time.

Agree he needs to be honoured in some way.

A very good player and well deserving of a tribute. But our greatest ever player? I dont think so.

Renaming the Family Stand the Peter Whittingham Stand will be fine. Big letters across the front of the roof. Everyone in the rest of the stadium will see his name at every game, and kids in the stand will want to know about him.

Don’t think many would disagree he deserves some form of lasting tribute to him. We can argue over his status as being greatest ever. But he was absolutely a city legend who was taken far too soon.

I believe the club should look at a lasting tribute to a very special player and in Whitts we had a player who made a huge contribution during his 10 years at the club. Does that make him our best ever player? that's down to personal opinion and all we can do is express opinions on the players we have seen play.

But ask any Cardiff fan for their favourite memory from the last 20 years and I would bet Whitts would be involved in the vast majority somewhere be it a goal, assist or even a red card for a badly timed but essential tackle. Whitts still has the highest number of assists by a player in Championship history, he is still the highest goal scorer in Championship history for a midfield player (13th overall), still joint top penalties scored in Championship football, in respect of our club Whitts is in the top 10 all time appearance and goal scoring. Best ever player? I don't know but most influential player in the last 15 years absolutely.

Saturday will be very emotional as we pay respect to not just a wonderful player but a husband and father tragically taken from us far to early.

God Bless you Whitts. R.I.P

This would be the most fitting tribute for him.

He was everything the Club stood for and most of all a true gentleman.

Gone but never forgotten RIP Peter

Spot on :thumbright:

In the 50 years I've been going down I don't think there has been a player who has had me off my seat as many times as Whitts.

You only have to look at the goals he has scored and most players (including Prem players) would be happy if they had scored just one of his top 20, never mind the numbers he cracked in !! In the Chopra/Bothroyd era he contributed to some of the best football I've ever seen.

Add that to the fact that he had any number offers to go elsewhere when he was at his peak and turned them down to stay with us (Forest wanted to sign him every year from memory  ). He was also a very genuine bloke who was happy to talk, and have a drink, with anyone.

The tragic way he lost his life just makes it even more poignant and I am more than happy to miss my last couple of pints in the pub on Saturday to make sure I'm there to pay my respects.

Naming a stand is the least we can do, and if cost is an issue that crowd funding would be a suitable way for us to recognise him contribution :bluebird: :bluescarf:

Word for word what I would have said. 50 years for me too and nobodies come close to enhancing my football supporting life as much as Peter Whittingham did. Gutted I cant be there on Saturday.

25 years for me now and the only other player who made me as excited as Whitts was Earnie.
Whitts is probably the best player that’s ever played in the Championship (post div 1). You only have to see twitter when this question is asked and most other team fans say the same, other than QPR who will say Taarabt for that one season.

His goal reel is up there with the best in the world imho, he also scored some very important goals. I never felt nervous when he was taking a pen.

An ultimate gentleman who always seemed embarrassed at how good his goals were. Didn’t want any praise and from what I know, absolutely loved this city/area and the people

He’s the best we’ve ever had for me. Others can say otherwise. That’s part of the beauty of football.

I’ve always said something of minimal fuss would be perfect, it’s probably what he would’ve wanted. Maybe just a plaque with his name, appearances and goals. The beginning of a CCFC wall of fame maybe

This is true. But let’s face it, for all the fun the fans may have had, the majority of those 100 years (other than the 20s) were spent in what is now league one and two. Whitts was an integral part of arguably our most successful period in our history

Not quite correct. We spent around 25 seasons in the top 2 divisions from 1949 onwards. Players included Ivor Allchurch. Alf Sherwood. Trevor Ford and Gerry Hitchens.

3 of those are better known for their time at other clubs.... Alf Sherwood would be a good shout for greatest ever but i dont see that Whitts isnt a good shout either..

A fair point but they were still all excellent for us. But while we are at it let's add Ian Gibson, Peter King, Brian Harris, Brian Clark, Phil Dwyer and Don Murray
Not forgetting David Marshall, Barrie Hole.Dave Bennett and Mark Delaney

Can't disagree with that; and it could be argued that our 'greatest ever' player already has a statue outside the stadium... :notworthy:

It is a good point, but having been there for 50 of those years (that makes me feel really old !!) Whitts has to be right up there.

Keenor, quite rightly has a statue and his contribution is marked. That doesn't mean that Whitts isn't deserving of some long term recognition.

Actually, up until the 80s long serving players at all clubs were pretty common place (including my first hero Phil Dwyer) but in Whitts era it was more the exception and that just adds to the argument.

You can go to many clubs and there's bloody statues everywhere !! I'm sure some of them have give statues to the cleaners  :laughing5:

Our club has not formally recognised any player other than Keenor, if Whitts isn't deserving of it then it will be a long, long time before we have this conversation about anyone else :bluebird:

Recognition- yes but not a statue.
Part of the ground whether it be a stand, part of a stand, part of the concourse, a road or something else.
