CARDIFF CITY v BARNSLEY
Saturday 7th August, 3pm
Sky Bet Championship
Cardiff City Stadium

Made a couple of slight changes to the match thread this season. Instead of having the section which was titled "about the opposition", there are now two sections titled "the opposition's manager" and "the opposition's dangerous players".

First game of the season :thumbright:

Cardiff City : Phillips; Ng, McGuinness, Flint, Nelson, Bagan; Ralls, Pack, Bacuna; Collins, Giles.

A full capacity crowd is allowed, with most restrictions lifted by this game :bluebird:

33,500 capacity :bluebird:

Tickets on general sale :ayatollah:

Barnsley sold nearly 1,000 tickets so far, their best ever away support to Cardiff. A very small club so well done :thumbright:

Cardiff City hoping for a bumper 25,000 crowd :bluebird: :bluebird:

Will Vaulks will also miss the clash owing to suspension after his red card at the end of last season.

:bluebird: TEAM NEWS :bluebird: MICK McCARTHY:

Has ruled out Lee Tomlin, Isaac Vassell, Rubin Colwill, Isaak Davies and Kieron Evans for this Saturday's curtain-raiser.

“Lee Tomlin is injured again, Vassell not ready yet, Collwill getting himself fully fit after covid, but Kieffer might surprise a few people.”

Isaac Vassell not fulky fit again from his slight set back :thumbright: :bluebird:

Latest Team News: 02/08/21

Lee Tomlin & Isaac Vassell New injuries , major doubts.

Kieffer Moore totally recovered from Covid :thumbright: :bluebird: :bluebird:

How can I watch this match on TV? (OUTSIDE THE UK ONLY)

Available to watch on Cardiff City TV, but only if you live abroad.

The Opposition's Manager - Markus Schopp

Markus Schopp is the newly appointed manager of Barnsley, after their previous manager went to West Brom.

This is his first job in the UK, having previously managed Sturm Graz's reserve team and TSV Hartberg in Austria.

Opposition Dangerous Players

Having lost Alex Mowatt to West Brom and Daryl Dike's loan ending, Barnsley have seen two of their top players depart this summer.

However, they still have Cauley Woodrow.

Woodrow scored thirteen goals last season and despite reported interest in him, he remains at Barnsley.

He will be the main danger man.

Previous Meeting

We drew 2-2 with Barnsley in January at Oakwell.

Difficult to predict the crowd. Normally first home game has lots of gaps with fans on the Spanish beaches. How many will be put off by Covid? I’m expecting a 20000 crowd.

Question though is how long will it take to get into the stadium and so when to pitch up there?

Looks like the canton stand will be sold out by tomorrow v Barnsley …. From nothing to bedlam, imagine most will get season tickets after the early bird deadline ends in a few weeks. Lots didn’t have them last season :bluebird: :bluebird:

Great numbers from them.

Like you say, not a big club.

It's a long journey for them as well.

The new season beckons and again hope springs eternal in this old fart and I see a repeat of the 4-0 defeat of Scunthorpe back in 2009.

Every time we have won opening game in last decade we have at least made the play-offs.

2011 - West Ham 0-1 Cardiff (play-offs)
2012 - Cardiff 1-0 Huddersfield (promoted)
2017 - Burton 0-1 Cardiff (promoted)

The Bluebirds have a number of injury concerns heading into the game, with Lee Tomlin, Isaac Vassell, Isaak Davies, Kieron Evans and Rubin Colwill all ruled out of today's clash.

Josh Murphy is also out after playing in the under-23s game against West Brom in midweek, but he shouldn't be too far away.

Kieffer Moore, meanwhile, is expected to start the game on the bench, having not played any football after contracting coronavirus following his post-Euro 2020 holiday.

Will Vaulks will also miss the clash owing to suspension after his red card at the end of last season.

Match facts

Cardiff City have lost one of their last 14 league games against Barnsley (W9 D4), a 4-3 home loss in the 2016-17 campaign.

Barnsley are set to face Cardiff in their first league match of the season for the first time since 2006-07, when they were beaten 2-1 at Oakwell.

Cardiff have lost their opening league match of the season in each of their last three seasons, as many as in their previous 23 combined (W10 D10).

Barnsley have lost their first league match of the season in nine of their last 13 seasons in the second tier of English football (W2 D2) and lost 1-0 to Luton Town last season.

From Mick McCarthy’s first league game in charge of Cardiff against Barnsley in January, no Championship side lost fewer games between then and the end of the season than the Bluebirds (3, level with Barnsley and Norwich).
