When was the last Cardiff player to leave

Sun Aug 01, 2021 1:27 pm

Just been thinking?,apart from Ramsey, how many Cardiff players, have left the club to go on to bigger things,so many players have left over the years but have either gone to a similar level in the championship,or to lower league clubs

didn’t go to well for Ken unfortunately, not a massive list of players in recent times, who have gone on to better things

Although I thought he was average at best for Cardiff (and I know many would disagree) I would say Gary Medel.

yes but i think most football fans would think he had already done better...played for Boca and Sevilla along with 50 caps for Chile prior to signing for us..

Semi Ajayi comes to mind. Didn't get a competitive game for us but did very well at West Brom.

Currently chased by Premier League Norwich if rumours are to be believed.

Good question.

We can't forget about Andreas Cornelius. Done very well in Italy with Parma and went to the Euros with Denmark. Definitely an argument to say he's gone to bigger and better things.

Danny Drinkwater went to Leicester and won the league. Depends if you include loan players. Could say the same about Kasper Schmeichel.

Theophile-Catherine went to St Etienne and now at Dinamo Zagreb - did well in the Europa League last season.

Tom Heaton went on to do well at Burnley and now back at Manchester United.

Juan Cala has gone on to play consistently in La Liga.

A lot of had moves to the Premier League but they haven't gone on to do well - the likes of David Marshall, Jordon Mutch, Rudy Gestede and Jay Bothroyd sprint to mind.

Heaton and Schmeichel on loan to us I think but both gone on well

That’s a point I make.

We haven’t sold a player that we didn’t want to sell for a long time.

Despite what is said on here.

Definition is we got a price we wanted rather than sell for financial reasons.

Medel and all the players we sold when we got relegated under Ole we sold for as much as or more than we paid for them.

We haven’t had a player leave like Ramsey, Chopra, Johnson for a good while. Maybe it’s because we haven’t had players other teams have wanted though.

we got 5 mill for chops and bought him back for 3...how is that poor business or forced... Johnson 5 mill for a 2nd tier CB 12 years ago...he moved to Wolves 2 years later for much the same amount....youd swear we were giving players away who went on to make small fortunes for the clubs they moved too... Ramsey ? a 17 year old with a handful of games under his belt... i think most people think he was under priced.. but its an open market and the other interested clubs could have bid more and didnt ? ....

Has any Cardiff player ever been transferred direct from Cardiff to a bigger club than Inter Milan?

I suppose you could argue Tosh to Liverpool at the time or Rambo to Arsenal but certainly in recent times I think Medel has probably gone direct from us to the biggest club of all our transfers out.

But had to sell to cover the losses as opposed to selling because we wanted to.

Richard Dunne 6 million same year RJ went. Danny Collins 3 million. Huth 3 million.

We sold him because we needed to.

Ramsey we 100% could have got more.

Every season we sold a player because we needed to. Part of the reason why the golden ticket shambles happened was because we didn’t sell Matthews as expected.

not sure what point your trying to make tbh...richard dunne 300 plus prem apps to villa same money as RJ 2nd tier player to brum..
thats a good price for us surely ?
yes mate we needed to sell medel ,campbell caulker etc too.... they were first team players ..
your deciding who had to be sold and who didnt by what exactly ?
and who on earth really wanted to buy Mathews who struggled to be first choice with us.... another Cameron Coxe type rumour...

My point is that we had to sell a player every year to balance the books. Had to.

No longer do we have to.

Ridsdale thought we were close to selling Matthews. It was why the golden ticket fiasco occurred to cover those monies. It was also why Tg had to get us three million quid to stop us being wound up.
