“ Cardiff City player is back in training again “

Fri Jul 30, 2021 8:39 am

It’s almost two years since Isaac Vassell last played for the Bluebirds and Vassell was back for Bath City away this season then ended up with a sore knee so has missed all the other friendlies but thankfully he is back in full training once again and hopes to play a lot in his final season of his contract with the Bluebirds :bluebird:

MICK McCARTHY:

"Isaac Vassell has been training and training really well," McCarthy said.

"Yet he pulled up with a sore knee the other day. But he will be back training this week.

"Look, Isaac has been out for nearly two years with injury. I think it's certainly a mental thing as well as physical.

"Because you feel something and the last thing you want to do is be injured and out again.

"So he has been and had a scan. He feels a lot better about it and I think he is training this week."

It has now become a case of getting not only his body right, but ensuring his head is in the right place, too.

Football, especially at this level, is about confidence and belief as much as it is about ability. Where the margin for error is so small, if you don't believe you can thrive in Championship football, it will swallow you up.

That is the challenge for Vassell, McCarthy and his Bluebirds team-mates.

With transfer money thin on the ground and Cardiff dealing only in free transfers and loans so far, McCarthy has had to lean heavily on the players already in situ and in that sense it has perhaps presented Vassell an opportunity.

Ahead of him is probably his biggest season yet. He has been out of competitive action for almost two years - not to mention his horrible injury record at Birmingham City beforehand - and will be desperate to make up for lost time.

McCarthy admitted that doubts have crept into Vassell's psyche, which is only natural following the years of lonely hours on the treatment table, but the manager, who also pleaded for patience with regards to the player's return, had some sage advice for his striker.

MICK McCARTHY:

"It's a big ask. Is it two years he's not played for? I think it is," McCarthy added.

"I've been saying to him. He has been beating himself up because he doesn't think his touch is there and his form is there.

"I keep saying to him, 'You just need to be physically right, then your form will come'.

"Hopefully now he has had the scan he will be happier and he can get back to training again."

Hope he's kitted out in bubble wrap and the other players have been told to stay 2 metres away from him. A bit windy today so hoping a gust of wind doesn't catch him.

Can't see him playing much, he seems to be a Sturridge type player. always injured. A shame really because he could do well for us.

The fact that he missed two years of games and then was injured after one pre season game missing all the rest tells you all you need to know.

Rather than sit around doing nothing can't he help out in the club shop?

Unless we have an Arkwright type till and he traps his delicate pinkies.

Some people are getting really pathetic now Chris.
You feel a few on here want him to fail!
You know - the ‘I told you so’ brigade.

Paul, sadly they're about and their general anonymity gives them the misperception they can say what they want and scuttle away to hide until they think the coast is clear...

If we can get ten or fifteen substitute appearances out of him and he can nick a goal or two then I’ll be pleased. I really hope the worst is behind him.

At least the lad is trying, some of you couldn’t even run a 5K, never mind recovering from the injuries he has had! He has had absolute awful luck, the last thing he needs is overgrown idiots like you lot slagging him off…
