So the day is finally here of the second round of matches in the European Championships. We face a tough Denmark side who got through their group with an emphatic 4-1 win over Russia in their last match, and will buoyed on but the outpouring of support that they have received from the football world after Playmaker Christian Eriksen’s shock heart attack a fortnight ago.
Our record against them isn’t a positive one with 4 wins and 6 losses in the 10 times that we have met previously. Most recently we suffered back to back losses against them in the Nations League back in 2018, going down 2-0 in Aarhus before losing 2-1 at the Cardiff City Stadium which prevented us from getting promotion from our respective group. You have to go back to 2008 to find our last win against them, with Craig Bellamy’s solitary strike enough to give us the win, in a match that Aaron Ramsey made his senior debut for the national side.
But we roll on to today and 2021 knowing that the hopes of the nation rest on the shoulders of the men that Robert Page picks. We have the experience in important players like Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and Joe Allen to get us through the game as well as the skill and guile of others like Dan James and Kieffer Moore and the solid Ben Davies and Joe Rodon at the back, not to mention the reliable and safe hands of Danny Ward in goal who’s really come to the fore and taken his opportunity well after a strong call from Page to pick him over the long serving no.1 Wayne Hennessey.
I think that we are both evenly matched sides and there’s not a lot to pick between us and so I expect it be a slightly cagey match that could catch alight in one moment of magic or skill from one of several players on both sides. Right now I’m not confident of us getting a result after seeing how we’ve played so far in the tournament, and the fact as previously mentioned that Denmark will have momentum with them after winning last time out, but anything can happen in tournament football as we’ve seen already in some of the group games involving other teams.
All I hope is that we do our best and play to our strengths and defend to the best of our ability. We can do this, now COME ON WALES let’s get the job done
