Met Police chief Cressida Dick calls for law change to allow positive discrimination in recruitment to favour ethnic minority candidates over white applicants

Not sure why it's unbelievable as it's been around in one shape or another from sometime in the 80s as far as I can remember.

It's stupid no doubt but not unbelievable. If I was in need of assistance for anything I would want the most capable person regardless of race, sex, religion or anything else.

Had a covid leaflet in post it had a non white couple as main picture but was only advertising possible side affects..... and as anyone noticed that large majority of ads on tv feature mixed race couples single non whites ect ect but very few all white couples? Where have these people been hiding past 10yrs ir so......Ffs even the flash dog advert his owner as changed colour is nothing sacred?

Agree with you been happening since the 80’s and maybe before. Channel 5 9pm tonight will be a shocker. Next thing we know Winston Churchill will be changed to suit.

The right person getting the job is history so many hoops for a normal person to jump through makes it daunting.

Why has racism started spiralling ? Because of utter BS like this. Racism for being white is being shoved down our throats. When I get emails from flannels or Tessuti etc the straight white male is being erased.
Any white girl has to have a black model next to her. The police force selecting on skin colour is disgustingly racist. The Fire brigade have been doing this for years and from what I have also heard the entry exam for white males is a lot harder than it is for everyone else.
Is it a wonder racism is rising ? That is why I have finished with football until they stamp out this woke racist BS from our game. You can’t even go to a game without this crap now.
And to top it off fans have been booing this knee bending bollocks but the TV stations is muting it or replacing the boos with pre recorded clapping.
I am proud to be a straight white male and if anyone thinks I should think differently then they can kiss my f*cking arse lol

I have seen both sides of the coin with my son - he has suffered negative discrimination because he's black and also had job offers because he will 'fill up' the ethnic minority quota that they must have set.

BOTH of these situations, in my opinion, are wrong.

He has also received discrimination from the police and all of the research shows the police could do with diversifying in order to better represent and serve the communities in which they are based.

Should that be forced 'positive discrimination' - not in my opinion... that should be improving the recruitment process, ensuring there is no negative discrimination and better regulating, training and monitoring the police - and they do need that.

I’m soon going into Recruitment based employment with the military and have had to read up on this subject. They’re calling it positive action (not discrimination), where ethnic minorities who are currently under represented in many jobs will be guaranteed an interview and/or test attempt. From there, the candidate still has to reach the standard required, but the thought process is that employment numbers will be a fairer reflection of society. Things like putting on events in certain areas to advertise the fact jobs are open to everyone, irrespective of skin colour, would also be an example of positive action.

Positive discrimination would be actually giving the job to a less able candidate based on ethnicity.

I’m not looking to debate the subject as it wouldn’t be professional, but thought I’d give the latest information having researched ahead of giving a presentation and attending an interview. It might provide an alternative way of looking at it for some people. :thumbup:

Excellent,I think we are saying the same thing

Undoubtedly there is a problem with discrimination in some sectors. As I mentioned I've seen it first hand.

And I think creating a system that helps everyone get to the same point of opportunity and then it's whoever is best for the job is huge progress.

Positive discrimination isn't a helpful response to negative discrimination.

No one wants to feel they are given a job to fill a quota. Alternatively some sectors do discriminate against Asian and black people
