Wales manager Ryan Giggs has been told the date of his trial after being accused of assaulting his ex-partner.

The former Manchester United player, 47, appeared at Manchester Crown Court on Friday where he faces charges of coercive or controlling behaviour, causing actual bodily harm, and assault by beating.

The defendant, who was named manager of the national team in January 2018 on a four-year-contract, is accused of subjecting his former partner Katie Greville to "isolation, belittling, humiliation, harassment, degradation and abuse" during their relationship between September 1, 2017, and November 2, 2020.

He is also accused of assaulting Ms Greville and her sister Emma Greville following an incident at his home in Greater Manchester on November 1, 2020.

A hearing at Manchester Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, April 28, heard there was an alleged domestic assault involving a "deliberate headbutt" aggravated by the fact he was "in drink". The court also heard there was "fear of violence on many occasions".

On Friday Giggs was told his trial will take place on January 24 2022 next year at Manchester Crown Court.

The defendant was unable to enter pleas to the charges as the prosecution have yet to finalise the particulars of the coercive and controlling behaviour charge. His barrister Ms Lisa Roberts QC indicated he would be pleading not guilty to all charges when arraignment takes place.

Judge Nicholas Dean QC, Recorder of Manchester, said when it came to selection of a jury panel potential jurors would need to recognise "this case has nothing to do with football or allegiances to a particular team".

Giggs,of Worlsey, Greater Manchester, who spoke only to confirm his name, was remanded on conditional bail to appear for a plea and trial preparation at the same court on July 23.

Speaking at the earlier magistrates' court hearing prosecution solicitor Andrea Griffiths, describing the coercive behaviour charge, said: "He isolated her from friends and colleagues, undertook incessant communication with her, subjected her to degrading treatment.

"When he didn’t get the responses he required there was a consequence and threat of violence on several occasions.

"When she did try to challenge him the defendant would pursue her incessantly and would threaten physical or professional harm against her."

Best if he says he is resigning to fight court case that way he can come back later if found innocent? faw can appoint page on a temporary contract as head coach. At least there will be clear pathway until after court case.

Quite right, but Page as interim manager not my cup of tea, Giggs is still picking the team even though he is not supposed to :banghead:

Former Manchester United footballer Ryan Giggs is to face trial accused of headbutting and controlling his ex-girlfriend Kate Greville.

It is alleged Giggs, 47, assaulted the 36-year-old and caused her actual bodily harm at his home in Worsley, Greater Manchester, on 1 November last year.

The Wales boss is also said to have engaged in controlling and coercive behaviour towards her between December 2017 and November 2020, namely that he used violence, isolation, belittling, humiliation, harassment, degradation and abuse.

He is also charged with the common assault by beating of Ms Greville's youngster sister, Emma Greville, in the same alleged incident on 1 November.

In a hearing at Manchester Crown Court on Friday the date was fixed for trial proceedings to begin at the same court on 24 January.

Giggs was not asked to enter his formal pleas but has denied all allegations and previously issued a statement in which he said he would "look forward to clearing my name".

A plea and trial preparation hearing was also fixed for 23 July ahead of the trial which is estimated to last up to three weeks.

Giggs remains on conditional bail and must not contact Kate or Emma Greville, or go to any address where they are.

My thoughts as well as faw would not dream of appointing page as manager if this had not happened ? Faw need to be proactive in what happens next.... gardening leave dont feel is an option as strong possibility he could be found guilty! Hopefully this won't effect the players ...

With this long delay in the court case I can’t understand why Giggs doesn’t continue being Welsh Team Manager until he goes to court?

Clearly you didn't take time to think before you posted that...? :?

Giggs is potentially in a lot of trouble and it would be remiss of his (or anyone other) employer to let him carry on whilst it hangs over his head

Only Giggs and his accuser(s) currently know the truth, so ot all has to come out and it will

Until then, the FAW are wholly right to suspend him , given he (Giggs) hasn't done the decent thing so far

I though you we innocent until proven guilty! I’m sure that most people wouldn’t give up their job for a year until a court case? He’s on bail not in prison yet!
