“ RUBIN COLWILL “

Thursday 27th May 2021

Cardiff City's Colwill, beaming following his inclusion in Rob Page's travelling contingent for the camp in Portugal this week, was put up for media duties and his excitement and youthful exuberance was clear for all to hear.

Still only 18, he is soaking in all the experience that comes with training with the likes of Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and the like.

However, one consummate professional who has always done the red jersey proud is Davies, the 58-cap Swansea product who just a decade ago was treading the first tentative steps of a journey Colwill hopes to follow in the years to come.

And the young Bluebird rightly holds Davies up as a role model whose career he would love to emulate, even if it will likely be at the club 42 miles down the M4.

RUBIN COLWILL:

When asked if Davies was viewed as a role model, Colwill replied: "Definitely. All the way through school it was 'Ben Davies is this, Ben Davies is that' and you've got to look up to what he was like.

"He is definitely a role model, having played at as high a level as he has. Following him through school was definitely a big help.

"I don't think I was quite as good as him [academically] through school! I get a lot that, 'Ben Davies was better than you at school' from the teachers.

"But it takes pressure off when someone has done it before you.

"All the attention you get, they're all used to dealing with that stuff, so it's definitely a big help he has come through before me."

He's not had the chance yet to discuss their favourite — and least favourite — teachers, but that is a conversation likely to be had throughout the course of the week.

For now, Colwill's primary objective is to grab the coaches' and players' attention by impressing on the training ground, something he has already done at club level.

Mick McCarthy was impressed with the youngster during one of his first training sessions back in January and chucked him into the first-team fold from thereon until the end of the season.

And Colwill has expressed his gratitude towards his club boss, without whom his sharp rise this season would not have been possible.

RUBIN COLWILL:

"He's been great," Colwill said of McCarthy.

"He is just supporting me every step of the journey so far and he is so full of positivity.

"He encourages me, he knows my qualities and if I show them here then just go as far as I can."

While Colwill has a real opportunity to make his mark with the Bluebirds next term, having had a taste of it with three starts in the final games of the season, his immediate focus has zeroed in on a potential spot in Rob Page's Euro 2020 squad.

It is perhaps unlikely, with Daniel James set to re-join the squad after he was omitted due to Europa League commitments — Manchester United lost on penalties to Villarreal in the final on Wednesday night — however Colwill's never-say-never attitude is admirable.

Page has given the youngster no assurances, but Colwill knows the score. He just hopes to aim as high as he can and grab the opportunity out in Portugal with two hands.

"He just said train as hard as you can and see where it goes from there," Colwill said of his conversation with Page.

"The standard is unbelievable in training, there are loads of good players here.

"But, I don't know, you've got to reach for the stars. It is possible. So I've just got to do as well as I can and fingers crossed."

He made his Wales under-21 debut just a matter of months ago and began the season on the bench for Cardiff City under-23s' 5-1 hammering by arch-rivals Swansea.

It is fair to say there are few players who have enjoyed such a steep upwards trajectory over the last few months.

Whether that culminates in selection for this summer's Euros remains to be seen, but Colwill is pragmatic about it and knows if it doesn't happen this time, he will still have plenty more opportunities throughout the course of what appears to be an exciting career ahead of him.

That's not to say he is not letting himself dream about getting the nod this summer, though.

"It's the pinnacle of players' careers, the international game," Colwill added.

"It would just mean everything to me. It's what you do when you're a kid; dream of playing for your country.

"To do it in such an unexpected way would be unbelievable."

Rubin Colwill spoke brilliantly at Wales press yesterday.
Notably about how Ben Davies, model club and country pro, has served as a role model for him.
It might be unlikely he gets picked for Euros, but I love his attitude of wanting to go all the way to the top :thumbright: :bluebird: :bluebird:

If he carries on progressing like he is, I think colwill will have a very good career - hopefully with us! Considering he only made his u23s debut recently, to be called up to the senior training camp (at 18) shows he must have something about him. Should be a massive boost of confidence for him going into next season.

And to think a lot of people on here were shot down for suggesting giving him a run in the first team.

Yep, fair play I wasn't convinced in his first couple of sub appearances but he certainly improved and looks to have something about him and plenty of time on his side.

Many might say that Sang is the better player but he's 2 years older than Colwill and those two years are really the ones where professional/academy players develop quickly or fade away.

Hopefully he's the star we've been waiting ages for :thumbright: :bluescarf:

There were a few intrigued eyebrows raised when Rob Page named his squad for Wales' training camp out in Portugal this week.

Friday 28th May 2021

Perhaps the name which most caught the eye was young Rubin Colwill, the 19-year-old Cardiff City forward.

Colwill's season went from strength to strength for the Bluebirds' under-23s and it culminated in him grabbing his chance with both hands during one of Mick McCarthy's first few training sessions in January.

"I watched him with the residual from the squad on Wednesday when he trained on Thursday and wow," McCarthy said of Colwill back in February. "He stood out like a sore thumb."

He was rewarded when McCarthy handed him his Bluebirds debut against Coventry back in February, before substitute appearances against Derby County and Nottingham Forest followed. But it was in the final three games of the season, all of which he started, when he really began to show what he could do.

He ran confidently with the ball, made smart runs in behind, set up chances and showed a robustness befitting of his 6ft-plus frame, which is certainly a desirable quality at Championship level.

McCarthy's feeling about the Bluebirds academy product was proved right in those final three fixtures and the youngster is reaping the rewards.

Colwill's ability to stand out and immediately grab the attention of those around him appeared to translate into Wales' mini training camp at The Vale last week.

With Premier League players and those involved in the EFL play-offs unavailable, Page and his coaching staff drafted in a few new faces to offer them a chance of showing exactly what they could do.

Once again, Colwill stepped up, snatched his opportunity and booked his place on the plane to Portugal.

Paul Bodin, the Wales under-21 manager, on Tuesday named his squad for their opening under-21 Euro 2023 qualifier against Moldova on Friday, 4 June.

Although Page's senior camp finishes on May 29, there is still no place for Colwill in Bodin's squad, which prompted many to question whether the Neath-born forward is in contention for senior side's clash with France next Wednesday, June 2.

That would represent a massive leap for the talented playmaker, especially with the likes of established internationals Gareth Bale, Harry Wilson, Aaron Ramsey, Jonny Williams, Tyler Roberts and the like also in contention.

And while at this stage it appears unlikely, under-21s boss Bodin did not rule out the possibility of Colwill being involved against the French next week.

"Rubin is a great talent and got great potential, and he's had a rapid rise in the past few months," said Bodin. "He's gone up to the senior squad, which is fully deserved, so he's in that squad at the moment.

"If things go well, he may stay with them but if he makes the 26 it would be a massive surprise because of the quality that's there. It's a fantastic experience for him.

"He could come back into my squad, we could increase the size slightly.

"He's away at the moment, having a great time and long may that continue. If he's ready and available for us and he's not going to be involved with the first team, then he'll step back in with us."

As Bodin says, Colwill's chances of being included in Page's final squad for the Euros are slim, especially given Dan James, Brennan Johnson and Josh Sheehan are all unavailable for the current camp.

But there is certainly an outside chance he is emerging as something of a bolter for a spot in the squad, certainly if, touch wood, an injury problem or two occurs ahead of Page's final announcement.

Cardiff are well represented on this Portugal training camp. Although Will Vaulks missed out once again, Kieffer Moore, Jonny Williams, Mark Harris, Harry Wilson, who has just finished his season-long loan in the Welsh capital, and Colwill are all vying to steer the coaches' attention in their direction.

All Colwill can do, though, is continue to impress, as he has done at club level and seemingly with the national squad.

Bodin aptly branded Colwill's rise as rapid, because this season he has shot from nowhere right into the forefront of the collective consciousness of Cardiff City fans.

With Wilson's loan spell at the club having now ended, Colwill could well have a clear run at that playmaker berth come the start of next season.

Any reason why Warnock didn't give him a chance. Perhaps youth spotting is a skill??

Or perhaps he just wasn't quite ready, money obsessed man...? :?

Having 6 games under his belt to date, he's hardly been prolific in the side since Warnock, has he? :?

So happy for the kid...played really well for us when given the chance and got huge potential in his game. Good luck to him if he gets the nod to play at any stage maybe the friendly game. And he will be full of confidence when next season starts for the bluebirds. I would off like Mark Harris called up too but I guess we have enough city players.

Warnock has been gone for over 18 months. The kid was barely seventeen then.

Credit to big Mick for giving the kids a chance I say. Not to sure how the youth was handled under Warnock and Harris.

Kids develop at different speeds I guess. Irish kid at 17 from Liverpool made his debut yesterday.

Anybody on here big youth followers. Always good to have the finger on the pulse for the future.

It’s ironic with all the Jack haters on here that Rubin is a Welsh speaker from the Swansea Valley and his hero is Ben Davies who went to the same school while Ben Cabango is a Cardiff boy rejected by our Academy now a star at Swansea! According to the radio this morning Rubin was training with Swansea City but Cardiff offered him an Academy contract first! Perhaps at last our Academy is making efforts to get their house in order and to attract the best youngsters in Wales!
