Peterborough United chief Barry Fry has conceded the club could be forced into selling Jonson Clarke-Harris this summer after the likes of Cardiff City, Swansea City and Rangers have been linked.
Tuesday 25th May 2021
The Bluebirds were linked with a move for the Posh forward, who enjoyed a stunning season in front of goal, netting 33 times, last month, but the competition for his signature is stiff.
Indeed, the Daily Record also report that Sheffield United and Sunderland are among those interested in signing the forward now, too.
And while Posh director of football Fry would no doubt like to see Clarke-Harris fire the club up towards the upper echelons of the Championship next term, following their promotion from League One, he admitted that the club might be forced to sell to "offset losses."
“Without divulging, the player’s not on a fortune," Fry told This Is Futbol. "At our level you don’t get a fortune and at Peterborough you don’t get a fortune.
“Throughout the last 25 years, we’ve put players in there, we’ve developed players, and the owners have put so much in, and it’s my job to sell a player to offset the losses.”
He added: “We’ve done that very, very successfully over the last 15 years in particular, and how we attract players in, we say ‘look, you’re not going to become millionaires with us, we’re little Peterborough United, but what we will do is give you a stage and if you perform, then people will buy you off us and they’ll give you lucrative contracts.’ ”
Following the signing of James Collins, it appears unlikely City will shell out any serious funds for another striker. That is, of course, unless Kieffer Moore leaves.
Cardiff Chairman Dalman has already made it clear that their are no funds available for McCarthy unless he sells first.
Bluebirds linked with swoop for Derby County's Waghorn
Cardiff City are reportedly interested in signing veteran Derby County forward Martyn Waghorn this summer.
The Bluebirds have already made a fast start to the transfer window, having already announced the signing of James Collins from Luton Town.
But, according to Football Insider, another striker is also grabbing the Bluebirds' interest in the form of 31-year-old Waghorn, whose contract at Pride Park expires this summer.
The Rams front man scored five goals and contributed five assists this term as Wayne Rooney's side narrowly avoided the drop to League One.
As is proving to be the case during McCarthy's reign, Waghorn is a player he knows very well, having signed him for just £250,000 at Ipswich Town back in the summer of 2017 following the forward's prolific two-year stint at Rangers.
In just a single season at Portman Road, in which Waghorn scored 16 goals in all competitions, the player's market value skyrocketed and Ipswich sold him on for £5m to Derby County.

I would love to sign Clarke-Harris but I really dont see us paying anything close to what Peterborough will want. Thats even before I know their opening asking price.
If we are going to spend any money I cant see it being for strikers now we have Collins, Moore, Vassell, Glatzel, Harris & Watters. Granted 1 or 2 will leave however

If it's a choice between Waghorn on a free or Clark-Harris for £5 million I think We can guess which way the board is going to go.

Another figure that seems to have been mentioned somewhere is £8million

And not for financial reasons? Waghorn is proven championship player ..... how many prolific lower league forwards we've signed and done nothing when come here?
