Football Sources: Cardiff City agree to sign Luton striker Collins after breakthrough

Wednesday 19th May 2021

Luton Town striker James Collins has agreed a deal to join Cardiff City.

The forward, has had interest from Middlesbrough and Coventry City ahead of his Hatters contract expiring next month.

But a source has told Football Insider Collins has reached an agreement to join Cardiff on a free transfer.

It will see him link up with Mick McCarthy, who gave him his debut for the Republic of Ireland in October 2019.

Mick McCarthy's Bluebirds are moving quickly in the transfer window and it appears the first deal is close to being wrapped up

The striker James Collins is 31 years old this year and has scored 10 goals in 42 appearances for Luton Town this season gone, plus 3 goals in cup competitions.

Luton Town have released James Collins, so Cardiff City are able to get him on a free.

Negotiations are said to have now been agreed the player.

Medical this week.

Collins helped Luton town from non league to the Championship.

James Collins of Luton Town was trailed by Middlesbrough and Bristol City but it looks as though Cardiff City have won the race

Neither of these clubs went any further, but the latest report is that Cardiff City have had a deal accepted.

The Bluebirds are in the market for a forward this summer, with Mick McCarthy keen to bring someone in to ease the burden on Wales international Kieffer Moore.

Cardiff already have Mark Harris and Max Watters in place, however both have a real dearth of Championship experience and it is felt more nous and know-how is needed if City are to really trouble those promotion spots next term.

TeessideLive, however, have claimed that Boro are resigned to losing Collins, who is poised to join the Bluebirds on a free transfer this summer.

Collins, who McCarthy handed his international debut to, boasts a terrific goalscoring record, having posted impressive numbers at each of his former clubs.

The 30-year-old frontman has 72 goals in 183 games for Luton, but, importantly, his style of play will suit Cardiff down to the ground - should the deal get over the line.

He is physical, abrasive and is adept at being deployed as a target man, which will be central to how City play next season.

The striker, who has eight caps for Ireland, has 188 goals to his name and will bring considerable clout to a forward line which has been lacking goals beyond Kieffer Moore.

Signing Collins on a free tallies up with how Cardiff are likely to conduct their transfer business this summer, utilising both the loan market and free agents.

Chairman Mehmet Dalman on Friday said the club had already identified "three or four" targets and admitted a striker was among the priority signings.

It appears Cardiff are edging towards crossing that off their list.

Luton fans think he is a good player to have on the bench and in your squad but not a starter .

It doesn't impress me tbh.

31 year old, not much left in him, rather have a younger player.

He played 42 games for them last season and was involved in 30% of their goals.

In that case I stand corrected.

Welcome aboard James :)

They just think he was a fantastic servant for them from non league to the Championship and if they are to progressive he had to
move on, they will miss him.

t

He has started 154 games for Luton and come on as a subsistute 20 times so he is a stater for them. For a free transfer centre forward this is as good as you will do. He has scored goals everywhere he has been including in the championship for Luton. Yes everyone would be disappointed if he was Moores replacement but he is almost certainly there to cover for Moore and occasionally play alongside him. I think he might be one of those who are an unexpectedly good signing rather than a Madine Revell type.

I think if Moore goes it will be for significant money and therefore we would be able to spend at least some of that on a first choice striker.

Don't have an issue with this signing as a back-up, so let's see what else happens during the window.

Sounds perfect for us and on a sensible wage, too (Luton are not big payers) :thumbright:

Hope it goes through and I'm sure he will get a warm Bluebird welcome :ayatollah:

I am a bit puzzled are we going for younger or older players as a few months ago Dalman stated we are only going for younger players and we intend to bring our average age down?

I've already said I stand corrected. As always I will be fully behind any player. As a glass half full kinda guy I will look for positives over anything else.

Welcome aboard the Bluebirds fun bus :bluebird: :bluebird: :bluebird: :D

I will be fully supporting him and def giving him a chance as first he is not injury prone and second was loved by Luton fans, 3rd low wage and lastly I always support new players :thumbright: :thumbright: :bluebird: :bluebird:

We needed a cheap suitable back up for Moore. Job done not sure what fans expect. There is no money so why would we pay alot for a back up striker. If true good signing city

Agreed, particularly if we get a fee for Glatzel, that would hopefully go back into the transfer pot.
