The Welsh Govt have announced fans to return

Tue May 11, 2021 10:51 am

The Welsh Government have announced that Swansea City and Newport County supporters will be able to attend their respective play-off semi-final matches as a major step is taken in the national plan out of Covid-19.

Pilot events have been confirmed with a proposed list of sporting matches to take place over the forthcoming weeks.

And that means good news for supporters of both Swansea and Newport who booked their places in their respective play-offs.

The Swans booked their place with two games to spare, and on the final day of the regular season, it was confirmed that they would take on Barnsley over two legs for a place in the final.

The first meeting between the sides takes place at Oakwell on Monday, May 17. Kick-off is scheduled for 8:15pm.

And it has been confirmed that the Jack Army will be allowed to watch Swansea take on the Tykes at the Liberty on Saturday, May 22.

Newport County's play-off match against Forest Green Rovers on May 18 has also been selected as a pilot event, as well as Wales' European Championships warm-up tie against Albania at Cardiff City Stadium on June 5, where 4,000 supporters will be allowed to attend.

Glamorgan will allow 750-1,000 spectators to attend their clash with Lancashire between June 3 and 6 at Sophia Gardens.

First Minister of Wales, Mark Drakeford, said: “It’s been a long and difficult 18 months for the events industry in Wales – for event owners, those who depend on the sector for the work - and for those who long to see the return of live events to Wales.

"As we look at lifting the coronavirus restrictions in Wales we have worked closely with event organisers to establish a list of pilot test events which take in a range of different locations and types of event. This work is bringing us a step closer to a return to events in Wales, I’d like to thank these event owners and Local Authorities and Health Boards for their commitment in working with us and wish them well over the summer.

“These events are very different in nature and location but access of attendees – whether participants or spectators – is strictly controlled by the organisers and agreed in advance.

“We're asking people to celebrate Eid differently again this year. I very much hope that celebrations at the castle are enjoyed by those with tickets. If you don't have a ticket please celebrate safely with your immediate household or within support bubbles.”

I notice that UEFA want to bring 2000 hangers on if the Champions league final is held at Wembley.
