i saw this thread on an aberdeen forum...it mentions that the aberdeen fans started to wear lebels after the visit of west ham in a friendly in 1981

is this true?....and why were west ham ahead of other clubs in terrace clothing?

We (Cardiff) started to wear labels around 1980-81, places like Wigan and Leeds had already started wearing them. My first designer clothes were Lacoste polo and adidas Wimbledon trainers and that was about 1981

I was at all the West Ham home & away games over the three years 1978-1980, absolutely mental at Upton Park. First year we took 800 fans, 2nd year 200 fans on a Saturday as well (by the end of the game just 60 of us left in ground)and 3rd year midweek only 25 of us were there.


Aberdeen and Hearts were the first two main Scottish clubs to wear casual clothes.

Rangers years on, Celtic not many ever did.

As far as I remember, a lot of West Ham were wearing green flight jackets late 70s.. skinhead gear

I was in Aberdeen in the early 80's and can absolutely remember their supporters in casuals.

As far as I remember, a lot of West Ham were wearing green flight jackets late 70s.. skinhead gear

American airforce MA-1 jackets. I had one, late 70’s. The real McCoy, not a copy. I wore it to death. Wore it to a West Ham away midweek game (24/11/79), I was in the West Ham end, very quiet, but I blended in well.

I was in Aberdeen in the early 80's and can absolutely remember their supporters in casuals.

Used to be a great trip for Rangers in 70s, we’d go to a night club after the match and buses didn’t leave till 1 on the Sunday Morning. Now it’s bussed in and straight out after FT.

I used to go up to Liverpool a lot in the very late seventies and early eighties with a mate who was a big Everton fan. Loved the look they sported then leather Hunter jackets Israeli parkas sking jumpers wedge haircuts when lads back home were still in double denim and dock Martin's.

Walking into the so called away end at Upton Park in late 79 was an eye opener; a few hundred city fans and loads of east end geezers. Horrible experience
