Cardiff City, Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest linked with Sunderland star

The forward has been in prolific form this season and is out of contract at the end of the current campaign

Cardiff City are among a glut of Championship clubs reportedly interested in signing Sunderland striker Charlie Wyke.

It is no secret the Bluebirds are in for a striker this summer, having been linked with no fewer than six since Mick McCarthy arrived just three months ago.

McCarthy revealed that Robert Glatzel is up for sale this summer, while quite what the future holds for Mark Harris, Mark Watters and Isaac Vassell is an unknown quantity at the minute.

But the Cardiff manager is keen to find a player who can ease the burden on Kieffer Moore next term, provided the Bluebirds manage to keep hold of the 20-goal striker.

That player must fit the bill for what McCarthy is looking for, an abrasive target man who can cope with the physical demands of the Championship and the manager's preferred style of play.

And, according to Sky Sports, McCarthy is hoping to mine the talent from his former club Sunderland and land Wyke this summer, but will also face competition from Middlesbrough, Nottingham Forest and Millwall, all of whom are also said to be interested.

The 28-year-old's numbers have been seriously impressive this season, having hit 29 goals in 49 games in all competitions, 25 of those coming in League One.

Another hugely attractive prospect for City is that the forward's contract runs out at the end of the current campaign, so they could land him on a free transfer.

Sunderland are, understandably, thought to be desperate to keep hold of him, but that will likely hinge on whether the Black Cats achieve promotion to the Championship this term.

They have waved goodbye to automatic promotion but, sitting in third place, are nailed on for a play-off spot.

Wyke is just the latest name to be linked with the Welsh capital city club and it appears their striker search is seriously ramping up.

Just this week the Bluebirds were linked with Manchester City starlet Liam Delap, while in recent weeks they have also been credited with interest in Peterborough ace Jonson Clarke-Harris, promising Rotherham youngster Joshua Kayode and Accrington Stanley striker Dion Charles.

It comes after Cardiff attempted to make some last-ditch striker signings back in January following McCarthy's arrival, when both Jordan Rhodes and Cameron Jerome were considered as replacements for the outgoing Glatzel.

My only concern with Cardiff City and strikers is that they don't really get a chance before they are deemed not good enough or get shipped out.
Players need to be given a run of games so that the club can REALLY get to know what they can do, rather than seeing them in training and thinking "not for me".

Can the players below really be classed as ones that have been given a fair chance at the club? Surely its better to give them a bit more game time instead of wasting money getting them in, only to sack them off.

Watters
Glatzel
Vassell - obviously injured but weve seen just 2 games from him
Bogle
Mark Harris
Healey
Ward - Generally used as a sub
Madine - to an extent
Velikonja
Saadi
Gounongbe
Guerra

Don’t know too much about the lad but his record this year speaks for itself. Also a physical target man type striker and on a free at the end of the year so seems like a no brainer. Sunderland fans don’t seem convinced by him and many saying he’s just having one of those brilliant years and he has never performed like this ever in his career. I have no idea as I said but if we can get him on a free seems like it’s worth a go

Sunderland fans are being a bit harsh on him saying he is just having one good season. He started scoring fairly prolifically for his two previous clubs Carlisle and Bradford that's what attracted Sunderland to him in the first place, struggled at first for Sunderland but has been really good this season.

Don't think we should sign him as he is similar too Moore who is better than him. Can't see him coming here as a number two to Moore and spending most of the time on the bench. He is from the north east,Middlesborough, and if he moves on I could see him going there. Sort of player Warnock likes perhaps
