Thursday 1st April 2021

MICK McCARTHY:

In encouraging news, Curtis Nelson has recovered from his calf injury and Perry Ng is also ready for the Nottingham Forest clash on Good Friday.

With Ciaron Brown having only arrived back from the camp with Northern Ireland on Thursday morning, Nelson could slot straight back in.

Meanwhile, Arsenal loanee Jordi Osei-Tutu is finally set to return to the pitch on Tuesday in what appears to be a friendly game against Exeter.

"He has come through training this week, he trained this morning and he was fine," McCarthy added.

"He will be playing on Tuesday, we have a friendly against Exeter on Tuesday."

When asked if Osei-Tutu needed two games at under-23s level, or friendlies, before entering the first-team fold, McCarthy replied: "That's still the protocol we have got from Arsenal and he is their player, so we have got to look after him."

BUT WILL BIG MICK MAKE A SHOCK ANNOUNCEMENT & PICK LEE TOMLIN FOR HIS SQUAD ON FRIDAY v FOREST AS CITY HAVE A NUMBER OF INJURIES?

MICK McCARTHY:

Had a little break, much needed and a good time after the result?

We have had a bit of time off. I’ve had a bit of time away. But it never ends, really!

We have had time away from the club and the players away from training. A bit of downtime.

But we had 10 bodies away, so even when we were back we didn’t have the full complement.

Ciaron Brown only came back today from Northern Ireland’s game last night.

Jonny Williams had a game, Browny had a game, Junior has had some time. They have had some game-time and it’s been good for them.

It was great to end on that (Swans) result. At least we could enjoy it.

A good position to be in when you’re chasing, no one expected you to be in this position when you came in. Is it a sense of changed expectation and pressure?

I would prefer to be top and they are all chasing me! But considering when we played Bristol, we could have gone fourth or fifth bottom.

You could sense the change around the place, the confidence. We are now nipping at those in front of us.

If you’re in the top six, all you worry about is falling out of it.

Even if you’re in the bottom three, you’re chasing to get out. Fourth or fifth bottom, you don’t want to drop in now.

McCarthy

It was a derby, but also had play-off ramifications, too, it sets you up nicely now?

It will count for nowt if we don’t back it up now!

You can’t guarantee a win, ever. You can only guarantee a good performance. If you perform well, more often than not you’ll win games.

The difficulty is, the intensity we have had, then people go away and it is splintered and fractured. You have to get back to that intensity. The way we were playing and those performances.

It’s not easy for any of us.

Do you think they are feeling you on their shoulder?

Middlesbrough, Bournemouth, Barnsley have been on the best run. Anyone in striking distance, they won’t be worried about individuals.

The thought of dropping out with six games to play is a worrying feeling. That can affect performances.

Building something special?

I’d like to think everyone will want to be fit every week, but it’s a nice position to be in now.

It just garners that feeling in the football club.

Everyone has wanted to be fit. We are looking forward to the game.

It's a case of putting your foot to the floor until the end of the season now?

Yeah. It’s been a good break. Forest have picked up of late, but two results can put you in a good position or you end up chasing the pack.

Fans in stadiums, pilots, can’t wait for next season and fans?

I wish they’d been in when we won seven on the bounce! I want them back in, it’s rubbish without them.

We are blessed we can come in and train and interact with each other.

It has been brilliant for us from that point of view.

We have been very fortunate, but it’s still rubbish without the fans. Everyone knows that. We want them back.

Got back to see your family, what’s it been like the relentlessness at Cardiff?

It’s been great, I live on campus at The Vale, at one of the apartments. I’m in the gym at 7am with TC and we are there until 6 o’clock.

People told me it’d be great in Cardiff, getting a flat in the Bay and getting a beer and going to restaurants, it’s all shut!

But the golf course is open now, so…

We have had a fair bit of success since coming in, so it makes it a lot easier to settle.

Yeah, I don’t sleep in the training ground! I have an apartment. But I do tend to watch football on the TV when I go back.

But I enjoy the busy days.

International break, Kieffer Moore running on fumes against Swans, happy he didn’t play too much for Wales?

I was thrilled! Delighted. When I got a call from Ian Baraclough to say Browny wouldn’t be playing I was delighted for that.

Because he wasn’t in the squad, Ian might have thought he was injured or poorly, so that’s why he called me.

Whoever turns up here, fit and ready to go, it’s needless worrying, I can’t do anything about it.

With Kieffer, it was a bonus. He could have played three games.

There more to come from this team? Had more time to work with them etc.?

I know exactly what I want from them and they have been producing them.

We’ve not had time. It’s been reproducing it in games.

Now, two weeks without a game, we’ve hardly had any of them here.

We had bumps and bruises in the first week.

Have you paid for a coffee since that Swans win?

I can’t go anywhere! I did make my way home and went to see my own wife and kids and my own family.

I know everyone is happy about it, no more so than me, that’s my job to win games.

Going into it, I was only made aware of the double and not winning there in 10 years, so it made for a bigger game and a better result.

Pre-match facts

Cardiff City have won 10 of their last 12 league meetings with Nottingham Forest (D1 L1).

Nottingham Forest are looking to win consecutive away league matches against Cardiff for the first time ever, having won 1-0 last season.

Since Mick McCarthy’s first game in charge, only Norwich and Barnsley (30) have won more Championship points than Cardiff City (29).

After winning 3-0 against Wycombe in February, Nottingham Forest have scored just five goals in 10 league games and never more than once in a game (W2 D4 L4).

Cardiff manager Mick McCarthy has won seven of his last nine home league matches against Nottingham Forest (D1 L1).

Osei-Tutu, Tomlin, Curtis Nelson in contention?

MICK MACARTHY:

Curtis Nelson is fine, Perry Ng is fine. They were the ones who had injuries and we thought could get back.

Lee Tomlin rocked his ankle prior to the under-23s game. It’s nothing major. To be fair, he has been working hard.

He was due that other game in the under-23s. It’s sod’s law, in the warm-up he stood on another player’s ankle.

He’s not going to be long. Just puts his training programme back

Cardiff City ready to pounce on rivals' promotion 'fear', says manager Mick McCarthy -

Cardiff City manager Mick McCarthy says fear of failure could start affecting their rivals for the Championship play-off places.

The Bluebirds are currently in eighth, four points shy of the last play-off spot, with eight games remaining.

The former Republic of Ireland manager says the pressure will be on those afraid of dropping out of the top six.

"It's a worrying feeling and that worry can affect your performances," McCarthy said.

Primarily brought in to help the club avoid a relegation fight, Cardiff have given themselves a fighting chance of a second successive play-off finish following McCarthy's arrival in January.

One defeat in 14 games - form which earned the 62-year-old a longer contract in south Wales - has turned around Cardiff's season.

A derby victory over third-placed Swansea before the international break only added to confidence within the Bluebirds squad that they are well positioned for a late challenge.

Re: BREAKING MICK McCARTHY:

Thu Apr 01, 2021 11:31 pm

Confidence boost -

Speaking ahead of Friday's visit of Nottingham Forest, McCarthy said: "Considering when we played Bristol City we could have gone fourth or fifth bottom (if we had lost), the difference is palpable.

"You could feel it around the place, how much it meant, the confidence people have which comes from playing well and winning games.

"It has given us a chance to be nipping at those in front of us, as opposed to be worried about people chasing us.

"If you're in the top six, all you worry about is falling out of it. Even if you're in the bottom three, you're chasing to get out, while fourth or fifth bottom you desperately don't want to drop in at this stage.

"And I know if you're in the top six, the last thing you want is to drop out now and that's by any of us chasing them, because it's really hard to get the momentum back."

Ahead of fixtures that see sixth-placed Reading play Barnsley in fifth, and seventh-placed Bournemouth take on another outside hopeful Middlesbrough in ninth, McCarthy accepts Cardiff will not be alone in thinking they could turn the screw on those already in the promotion spots.

A former promotion winner with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sunderland, McCarthy says his aim will be to try and get players back up to speed following the international break, where he says he was "delighted" top scorer Kieffer Moore did not start two of Wales' World Cup qualifiers.

Defenders Perry Ng and Curtis Nelson are also fit again for selection, but Jordi Osei Tutu and Lee Tomlin are still completing their recoveries from injury.
